Is it worth it to transfer from Purdue to Georgia Tech? I am currently in my first year at Purdue.
I don’t know, is it worth it?
Only you can decide.
If you give no background, then no one can answer you.
What’s wrong with Purdue - is it the size of the campus, the cost, something else?
If you’re thinking you’ll get a better career outcome, that’s an unknown - really vs. any school - but it’s unlikely.
I do know this - if you’re already looking to bail when you just got there, how good an experience can you have?
Purdue is a very good university.
Both Purdue and GT are schools that are known for technology and engineering. These are areas where small differences in the ranking of the university that you came from really does not matter.
Just a wild guess based on your login name: I will guess that you might be a mechanical engineering major. Good choice. Both Purdue and GT are very good for mechanical engineering, and both are ABET accredited for mechanical engineering (or at least that is what I just found doing a Google search).
You are already at a great university with a strong ME program. I would stay where you are unless there is something important that you have not told us (such as being in-state in Georgia and being able to go there for less money).
If you ever want to get a master’s degree (as I understand it not really needed for an ME major, but possible), graduate school admissions will know how strong Purdue is for ME. This includes graduate school admissions at top schools such as GT or Stanford, or just about anywhere else.
I feel like it’s so dead here and that maybe a city campus is what I want? I’m sorry for being vague.
I know we have good opportunities but trying to get involved recently has felt like more of a roadblock. I’ve had previous research experience and I wanted to get into that which basically got me lots of backlash from faculty whereas friends at other schools have had little to no trouble. I know that’s one specific example but I guess the other one would be that it feels really slow sometimes. Maybe I’m just not in the right areas?
So it’s more about what you do rather than where you go at this comparison level. Good to know that. I should probably give it more time then. I was also curious about electrical engineering. In that context, what is your opinion?
OK - so it’s not because Ga Tech is higher ranked.
Do you have auto admit to Ga Tech? If not, there are excellent engineering programs out there - in cities - from UMN to Arizona and more. Honestly, where you go for ME likely matters little. I am sending you a PM - look for the green box in the upper right.
You’ve been there two weeks - can you honestly say you’ve given the school a chance - you say roadblock. Boy, if you’re giving up this quickly, life is going to be long.
@momofboiler1 any ideas/thoughts?
If you have interest in other disciplines, then you’re at the right school - since you have FYE.
I would have the same opinion regarding electrical engineering. Again you are comparing two very good universities with very good programs.
Not exactly. They officially see each other as peer institutions according to their websites. I just want the best opportunities.
I’d agree they are peers - with many others by the way.
I’m just trying to figure out why you want to leave - and I thought maybe that was one possibility.
There’s many urban schools that are very good - but you chose Purdue for a reason so it seems two weeks in, odd to be ready to bail.
You need to make an effort - to meet kids, meet profs. Talk to an advisor. Go see your prof during office hours. Ask others doing research how they got.
If you don’t do leg work, I don’t care if you’re at Portland State or Purdue, Georgia Southern or Georgia Tech….you’re going to struggle.
Other than location, Purdue and GT are very similar in vibe, type of student, and approach to engineering.
It sounds to me like you need to give yourself more time to adjust. You’ve only been at school a few weeks!
Have you gone to any club call outs? Did you go to the football game? Are you going to IR tomorrow?
Do you live in a living/learning community? If so, go to all the events events if they don’t sound totally up your alley. You will meet more people and make more connections.
Also note that unless you are a GA resident, transferring into GT is extremely difficult. The transfer #s look higher than they actual are because of instate pathway students.
