Transfer from Purdue to HY possible?

Hi…do purdue freshmen or sophomores generally transfer to HY? Im a fall 2007 freshman and though i got rejected at HY as a freshman i’m hoping to transfer ( even though HY engg is nowhere near Purdue). I am international applicant btw.

Harvard and Yale are tough admits (Yale particularly). Beyond those two even Dartmouth, Columbia, and a few others are very tough. I’d suggest Northwestern, Michigan, Georgetown, UNC, WashU, Rice as the top schools that are easier transfer admits.

Most HY (and other Ivy) engineering majors don’t go into engineering, but rather the more lucrative fields of banking and consulting.

well yea transfers are really tough…what i meant was that since purdue is a core engg college…shudnt the reputation help while transferring to HY?

Unfortunately it won’t make a difference. You need to have a great SAT score, strong HS record, good ECs, and a great GPA to even have a shot.

No, not really. There were quite a few students that tried to transfer from top 20 universities, which will carry quite a bit more weight than Purdue, and they were still denied from Harvard and Yale. As for Yale, I only know of one student that was accepted (a community college student with a very unique background). For Harvard, I think 3 or 4 people got in. One was from Duke. Among the rejected was a student with a very high GPA from Columbia. In other words, don’t bank on the Purdue name helping you. Do consider the schools slipper mentioned in addition to Harvard and Yale.

It seems that we had a lot of acceptances on College Confidential for WashU, Northwestern, and Georgetown in particular.

well since im into engg i dont really like the idea of moving to WashU, Northwestern, and Georgetown. What about my chances at UCB/UCLA/MIT/Caltech/CMU/Cornell/Penn? i was waitlisted at penn for freshman btw

@slipper1234 - wat exactly is a good SAT score? i have 2190…which was 98 percentile for CR and Math. The other requirements are not a problem

If you get a high GPA at Purdue and had decent HS stats (assuming you did to be waitlisted by Penn) I think Cornell and Penn would be worth a shot. MIT and Caltech have < 4% transfer rates. UCB and UCLA are really tough for OOS kids because they take so many from in-state community colleges.

I would consider Michigan. Very strong engineering program and the school doesn’t have a strong bias against OOS students like the UCs and UVA.

@brand_182 - wat about duke and northwestern and cmu and brown? i will def be applyin to ann arbor. yea my HS stats are excellent. have national awards for academic excellence

northwestern is a top 14 engineering school.

@racnna - oops yea my mistake…

don’t even bother applying to harvard or yale.

Well, you can get these statistics from the CDS, but I believe the transfer rates are something like:

duke - ~5%
northwestern - 20-25%
CMU - < 15%
Brown - ~15%?

And Brown isn’t really known for its engineering program either. Nor is Harvard or Yale for that matter, so I wouldn’t cross out Georgetown or WashU just for that reason since they are extremely good schools that could be in the bag for you if you do well in your first year.

georgetown doesn’t have an engineering school.

what’s a good HS GPA to have to transfer to the top 20 schools? Would anything above a 3.0 work well enough?

i speak from personal experience. I had very solid essays, very solid recs, and e.c.s, and a gpa that was very high from a top 15 school. I got denied at harvard as a transfer, and got the same result at yale. i did get into UPenn.

degerle, you should aim for at least a 3.5+. that should be the minimum unless you’re transferring from like mit to stanford, etc.

I meant high school GPA. Is it still the same?

Brown is not %15 for transfer. It’s anywhere between 5 and 20, varies.

that’s why I put a “~.” It was like 3% last year but is higher this year. I’m guessing between 10 and 15%.

you base that on ________?

One thing to consider is that at lower ranked schools with highly ranked engineering schools (ex. Purdue, UIUC, GaTech, etc) students tend to go into actual engineering. At the TOP engineering schools (MIT, Caltech) and the Ivies students tend to go into higher paying fields such as banking and consulting if they are engineering majors. For the top jobs, engineering rank is much less important that overall school rank.
