Transfer Housing (Junior Standing)

I was recently accepted into UNC Chapel Hill as a junior transfer student. I was assigned Craige North, and I was hoping for a north campus residence hall with a corridor, rather than suite, layout.

From what I understand, I am stuck with this assignment for the school year, both fall and spring. I suppose I can still hope for senior year - or summer school even - on north campus, giving me the option to experience the best of both worlds; this would, of course, be if I stay in dorms senior year.

What is your opinion on this? I think Craige North and south campus residence halls are known to mostly be assigned to freshman, and labeled with the “freshman experience.” I guess it is cool that I can see what that is about, though, as I was never able to experience that as a transfer.

Also, I think Craige North is a living learning community, something I never even applied for. Does being a resident of the dorm automatically make you a part of the LLC?

I sent them my housing assignment request form, and I must say, I chose Old East and Old West which are probably reservered for legacies and sports players, but hey waht the heck :)!

I also mentioned I wanted a single room, but they seemed to totally disregard any of these requests, as my housing assignment was received two (2) days after I sent off the paperwork. Thus, I am not sure how they could have taken my requests into consideration.

Is there anyway to dispute my housing assignment, for a single room, and somewhere on North Campus, and do you think I should even do so; for one, I still have senior year like I said, and I don’t want to be rude or whatever.

Thanks, and CollegeConfidential is a freakin’ lifesaver!!!

Also, I think I read somewhere on College Confidential that there are typically many honors students placed there.

I would probably call housing and explain your situation. Can’t hurt! Craige North is actually not your typical suite-style dorm - all the rooms are on a hallway, and your room will share a bathroom with another room (the bathroom “connects” the two rooms internally, so you have to clean it yourself - housekeeping can’t enter the rooms). It’s actually a pretty nice dorm, but I do think it is mostly freshmen and sophomores. I have several friends who were randomly assigned to LLCs, and from what they told me, you don’t have to take part if you don’t want to.

I think most honors students are housed in Cobb.

Also, just because you’re in Craige North does not mean that you will automatically be placed in an LLC. Usually the LLC consists of just one or two floors of the dorm.

“I would probably call housing and explain your situation. Can’t hurt!”

Please elaborate.

Well… It can’t hurt to take the initiative and call housing and see what they say about getting your assignment changed. All the times I’ve had to call housing for whatever reason they’ve been really nice. The worst they’ll say is that you’re out of luck and you can’t switch, but at least you’ll have an answer one way or another. Good luck! : -)

thanks. part of me says to stick with what I have been given. I would look pretty stupid choosing another which I might end up disliking more. haha.

Call housing! I found a roommate on roommate finder and they said they never received my application and the only way we could live together is if we were Hinton James. I faxed over my application again and they gave me 2 days to contact them. I did and we’re both in Spencer!

well. i’ve been assigned a roommate. i sent them an e-mail, but I haven’t heard back. I have contacted someone about finding a single room, or somewhere on north campus; seems i have to be put on a waiting list.

i’m on roommate finder, but haven’t found it very useful.

alderman vs craige north?

Alderman.

Craige, eringhaus, Hinton James are the real south campus dorms that create a social atmosphere. The new dorms aren’t the same. The architecture and layout doesn’t promote socializing.

Alderman is probably what you want as a junior. Though I would Over generalize and say that upperclassman on campus ie people that live in alderman, are more academically oriented and probably less out going.

Alderman is older but has much more character as a building. The location wins in my opinion. Closer to classes, the pit/quad and Franklin street.

yeah. i definitely think being with a bunch of freshman, while offering the freshman experience i missed out on, would be less appealing to me as my situation is so different than theirs.

craige north looks nice as it is one of the newer residence halls; it looks open and spacious. privacy due to suite style.

however, north campus has such class, and as a junior, one needs to focus on their major GPA, especially anyone with plans for graduate school. thus, the level of maturity and mindset seen in the upperclassmen is probably best for me…

idk. hate to give up craige north… if alderman turns out to be less appealing…

Alderman! The Kenan community is great. You cannot beat the location!

Alderman, definitely! My good friend is living there and her room is fabulous. I live in Spencer and the location of the Kenan community is just wonderful.

hey! i live in spencer too, come say hi! hahaha being an out of state transfer student is proving to be a bit difficult when it comes to meeting people!
