<p>S is AA male who transfered from an average intercity school to a very good suburban school sophomore year.</p>

<p>S was a honors student at previous school but the classes were easy, he really struggled during sophomore year catching up to the new schools class content which was well ahead of his previous school.</p>

<p>The result is he had a very low GPA after his sophomore year going into junior year.</p>

<p>Can he still get into top schools with a 3.5 and top 25% class rank with this upward trend?</p>

<p>How should he address the struggles he had adapting to the new academic environment his Sophomore year in his applications, a letter?</p>

<p>Yes, he should address the challenges with a letter. An upward trend with the explanation will look good for him. This will show that he can handle change, rigor, etc. — and excel. It also shows that he embraces challenge. There are colleges that look at gpa/rank only & don’t dig deeper. However, you wouldn’t want him at those schools, anyway.</p>
