Hey guys
Lately I was really troubled with my future. I’m a freshman at UCSB, but I don’t like the school very much. I can’t really get along with anyone, and I don’t like this slow-mode of life in Santa Barbara. I guess that’s because I’m from Hong Kong and I’m used to fast-pace.
Anyway, I was quite upset since I went to UCSB. So I planned to transfer to another school. Unfortunately, I messed up the application and only got accepted by Fordham Lincoln center.
What I’m not sure about is that is it worth it to transfer to a school with a much lower ranking and less reputation than UCSB. I really care about what the school can offer. Fordham has a small class size, which means I can reach out to my professors more frequently, but I am a little worried about Fordham’s academics. However, I am pretty sure UCSB isn’t the right school for me, and staying at UCSB would be a nightmare for me…
So what’s your guys’ take on this? Should I transfer to Fordham or stay at UCSB? I will greatly appreciate your thought.
Transferring from one school that you are not thrilled with to another school that you are not thrilled with does not strike me as a useful move. I do not see you mentioning a compelling reason to transfer.
Are you likely to want to transfer again after two years? If so then transferring once after two years strikes me as being a lot better than transferring twice.
I would be tempted to stay where you are and work hard to do well. Try to get high grades. Stay ahead in your class work and try to get to know your professors.
In most schools you will get into smaller class sizes as you get into upper year classes.
Also, get involved in some clubs or activities. If you try one club and do not like it, then try a different club.
I forgot to mention that my sole reason for transferring to Fordham is NYC. I spent my high school there and I really like the city vide in NYC. Yes, I may try to transfer to NYU again cuz NYU is my dream school, and Fordham is like a second choice. If I didn’t get into NYU after two years, I wouldn’t be disappointed about staying at Fordham, since I’m already in NYC.
I guess it’s a little dumb to transfer to a school simply because it’s located in your favorite city. But the years I’ve spent in NYC were the best part of my life, I miss it a lot. So I guess the only question here is is UCSB a way better school than Fordham that transferring to Fordham would mean receiving a worse education.
Would you be happy at Fordham for three years if another transfer application doesn’t work out? That is the question to ask yourself.
Also, frankly, you should be planning now to have your fall semester online. So unless you have a place to live in NYC, you aren’t likely to be there anyway. You’ll be at home studying from your laptop in your bedroom just like you’re doing now.
