Wondering if anyone has ANY experience with transferring from one MT program to another?
My S (freshman) is not happy in program he is in and would like to apply elsewhere. What seems to be a problem
is that most of the college applications ask for a counselor and a teacher reference from college. He feels as though this is tricky to ask reference from one of his teachers/counselors. His counselor is one of the main MT teachers! and he really hasnt connected with any of his teachers academically to ask them for a reference (although he has been doing well academically) He fears this might sabotage his current situation as well as possible future situations? These teachers have known him barely two months. ANy ideas or help would be greatly appreciated

Hi there, This must be hard to hear as a parent that he is not happy. I think I would encourage him to stick it out the first semester or even year to give the school a chance and do well in his current classes. Sometimes it takes kids longer to adjust so he could end up making some friends and liking it. Then if he still doesn’t like it he can have an honest conversation with his counselor and explain he truly gave it a try and it isn’t a fit. It will be hard but he will grow from the experience. That is what I would counsel my child to do …at least I think. She is only a senior. So disappointing though tbat he doesn’t like it

The only problem is if he does not apply/audition for other schools now, he will not have a new program to be a part of next year. I agree that he needs to give the current school more time -all kids go through some ups and downs the first year as they adjust to new people, places and classes. But in the meantime, if he wants to have options for next year, he will also need to go ahead and apply other places now. This can make it tough to look for the good in where he is currently if he is focused on what other programs may fit better. Hope he finds the place where he will be happy :)

My D left her original MT program after 1 semester. She was very unhappy with the program itself- it was not a case of homesickness or being a poor social fit. I would normally say kids should give any program a longer try but at the high cost of the program (and of most MT programs) she opted to leave. She decided to go b to our local cc for 3 semesters and finished her GE classes. Then she reapplied to MT programs and graduated in 3 years from a BFA MT program. She loved everything about the 2nd school and it confirmed her feeling that the 1st school was not a good fit. Going to the cc in between let her make connections with the teachers to use for references, and gave her a chance to figure out a plan and reapply. The 2nd MT program let her use some of her credits and go in as a sophomore, so she graduated in 5 years instead of 4, but with only 3-1/2 years in an MT program.
