Wondering if anyone has ANY experience with transferring from one MT program to another?
My S (freshman) is not happy in program he is in and would like to apply elsewhere. What seems to be a problem
is that most of the college applications ask for a counselor and a teacher reference from college. He feels as though this is tricky to ask reference from one of his teachers/counselors. His counselor is one of the main MT teachers! and he really hasnt connected with any of his teachers academically to ask them for a reference (although he has been doing well academically) He fears this might sabotage his current situation as well as possible future situations? These teachers have known him barely two months. ANy ideas or help would be greatly appreciated

whoops! Posted twice! SOrry!

I think most schools would be understanding if you used teachers and counselors from high school/home given the circumstances. It is understandable that you not wish to make your current school aware he is considering transferring. D knows severall people who transferred to other programs and this is what they all did.

I agree with vvnstar - especially if he is applying now, and college teachers have known him such a short period of time… Is he planning on sticking out the year, or is he unhappy enough that he is thinking of leaving at the semester (assuming his school is semester)

thank you for your support! The only problem is that the schools he is applying to ask for college teachers or letter of recs! But, I guess it would not hurt to ask high school teachers and see what happens at his point

@boom22 - are transfer applications general (for full college) or specific to MT program? That could make a difference.

He could also call up the programs he’s interested in transferring to and ask them what their advice would be. He doesn’t have to say what program he’s in. He should speak to the folks in the program itself, not general admissions. A lot of rules are flexible if you ask and have a cogent reason, as he does.

Thanks for your input. As many of you know, having the MT factor in this application process makes
it soooo much harder than your average application and then add the complicated transfer fact from a small
program! It is tricky because he does not want to sever ties with this program and he is not sure that he might grow into it, but afraid if he lets them know he wants to leave, they will not want to invest in him…complicated uGHHGHHGHHHG THOUGHT I WAS DONE WITH THIS!!! :-t

I really do think using high school and/or arts professionals from home will be just fine. Especially since he’s a freshman so he hasn’t had time for his current school’s faculty to get to know him well. I am sure they realize it is a sensitive situation.

My D went through this 2 years ago, she submitted her applications right after Thanksgiving and did all her auditions Jan and Feb. She got into her first choice school and has never regretted her decision to transfer. She liked her old school and even made great friends but she knew it just wasn’t the right “fit” for her. She was fortunate that transfering was actually encouraged by several of her professors and they wrote reference letters for her but as others posted I am sure they would accept recommendation letters from HS. Be aware that he will be asked at interviews why he wanted to transfer, having a clear idea of what he wants out of a program and being able to express that is essential.

Thank you all so much for your support!!! Everyone has helped so much. It is comforting that there
might be light on the other side!
