Transfer out of UCLA

I only completed my first quarter of UCLA where I got a 2.23 due to a family emergency combined with mental health problems. I want to transfer to be closer to home. I took the rest of last year off and am taking this year off to work and do a political internship. However, my highschool gpa is a 3.8 and my ACT is a 32. What should I do? Should I go back to UCLA And stick it out or does anyone know any schools I should try transferring to?

Im not sure if you can do this for UCLA you might want to ask around. But according to my friend who went to Cal had a similar situation and Cal let her take classes at a CC for her GE classes and will let her go back for her upperdiv courses. But then again thats what she told me so you should maybe see an advisor and ask.

I live in Boston though so I doubt they’ll let me do that. Also, if I go to community college for two years then transfer how will my 2.23 come into play?

Where do you want to go? Unfortunately that GPA is with you for the rest if your life. You have to report it.

Ouch, I’m sorry to hear you had such a difficult first quarter at UCLA.

If you stick around, and you haven’t already, I’d recommend looking at the CAPS center at UCLA.

I can speak from first had experience that their services are great. I also recommend looking into their groups.

You’re in a difficult situation. I’m not sure what schools would take you with only one quarter completed and a low GPA. If you really want to be closer to home, you can try attending a Boston CC and transferring to a Boston school. That might work out for you.

Again, if you decide to stick around, I’d also recommend looking into UCLA’s pass / no pass policies. For example, I’m fairly confident I would have received a C+ in Latin III if I hadn’t taken it P/NP. Obviously that would have wrecked my GPA so I’m glad I didn’t take it for a letter grade.

My advice is to take some time and really try to decide what’s best for you. Whatever you decide, you’ll be making a big life decision. So I advice you to think it over carefully.

If you really want to transfer to be closer to your family then you should look into it. I’m sure it would be less expensive since you were paying for UCLA OOS. You should also contact UCLA to see what you would have to do to reenter there since you’ve been gone for so long.
