Transfer Question

I spent my first three semesters at a Penn State branch campus, but moved up to University Park for the fall 2007 semester. I originally planned on transferring because I absolutely did not want to go up to UP, and actually went through the process (got into UNC-CH, Northwestern, Emory, and American; got rejected from JHU and Tufts); however, I also got into Penn State’s Schreyers Honor’s College and since I get an employee discount, couldn’t really turn that down.

Anyway, I really don’t like it there and am dreading going back up in 2 weeks and was thinking about trying to transfer again. I have more than 60 credits already, though so I’d probably take the upcoming semester off (and work or get an internship or something) if I decide to do this. How would this look to the schools I’m applying to? My GPA went down a little bit as well (from 3.82 to 3.76). I’d probably apply to similar schools as I did last time, with Johns Hopkins as my first choice. Would it be worth it to transfer again?

i had a similar situation where i applied to transfer after my first year of college and then had a great last month of school and decided to stay. i realized over the summer that i really didn’t want to go back, and that my school didnt meet my academic needs and expectations. thus, i elected to take a semester off, and it was a WONDERFUL idea. as long as you do something with your time, and show that you have good reasons for transferring, you will be fine. your GPA is fine, and it is always worth transferring if it will make you happier.

i got into 4/5 schools that i applied to and as a result also have a lot of new experiences under my belt (including hiking in the himalayas, doing medical research, working for NPR). i am also much more focused on my academic goals and CANNOT wait to get started at my new school (oberlin).

good luck!
