Hi all,

I am looking to transfer from the US Military Academy into NC State University. I’m currently a Sophomore at USMA, and basically the school, along with the future it carries, is not for me. I’m a Civil Engineering Major and would have about 2, maybe 2 and half, years at NC State to finish my degree after transferring at the end of this school year. I currently have a 3.83 GPA at West Point and meet all of the transfer requirements for NC State’s Engineering College. The only problem is money. Fortunately, I have had this year’s and the past year’s education(books, tuition, room and board, etc.) and living costs(health care, food, personal expenses) fully paid for by the Army, but all of this will be a huge new cost upon transferring to a civilian school that I will have to pay for by myself.

I’m just posting here to seek advice on getting the money to pay for college as a transfer student. What kinds of scholarships are out there for transfer students? How much will FAFSA help? Also, I’m interested in working through NC State’s CO-OP program for CE; will this help at all?

Since you were not in the military, if you are under 24, your financial aid will based on your parent’s income/assets. Your in-state/ OOS tuition will be based on whether your parents are residents.

Do you have to pay back what they paid for your education?

My parents and myself are NC residents.

No, I do not have to pay back West Point. You only have to pay them back if you leave after you’ve began your Junior Year

For starters, fill out FAFSA EFC estimators and NCState’s NPC for yourself. Estimate what your parents’ income and yours will be for 2012 using prior year tax returns as guides. Get some estimate on what your earnings are. Inquire what kind of aid, and if there are any merit awards transfers students can apply for at NCState. Can you commute to the school?

Back when my brother went to the Academy, it was known as an $80K education shoved up ones back side a nickel at a time. That’s about $20K a year. NCState Is a bargain price wise among colleges but if you aren’t living with your parents, paying for your living expenses is not an inexpensive thing.

Cpt, it’s a $250K education shoved… Particularly when you look at the summer programs and other training provided.
