Transfer student from SoCal CC aiming for UCs and CSUs - chance me [4.0 college GPA, computer science]

Thank you in advance to anyone reading this! I appreciate any comment

Demographics:

  • Female, live in SoCal
  • Middle Eastern w/ Iranian immigrant parents – CSU’s count MENA as white, UC’s count MENA as its own category
  • Income has been very up and down the past few years for my family – been facing a lot medically. Pell-Grant eligible for 2023-2024 school year, considered middle-class for 2024-2025 school year

Intended Major(s): I applied computer science to each of the 8 schools. Alternate majors varied between applied math, data science, and CSE

UW/W GPA: 4.0 GPA

Units (semester): 67 completed, 22 in progress

Coursework: I will list each semester’s classes if yall are curious. If you don’t want to read it all, totally get it, it’s quite a lot: just know that I will have competed all required coursework for every school by the end of this semester (spring 2024). I will also have completed an associate’s degree for transfer for both mathematics and computer science.

  • Fall '22: Public Speaking, Honors English Composition, Precalc and Trig, Intro to Comp Sci (CS 1), + a random 1 unit transfer course
  • Spring '23: Calc/Analytical Geometry 1, Programming Concepts and Methodology (CS 2), Honors English Literature, American Gov/Politics, Biological Anthropology
  • Summer '23: Physics 1, Physics 1 Lab, Calc/AG 2, Intro to Cinema
  • Fall '23: Physics 2, Physics 2 Lab, CS 3, Calc/AG 3, Honors Child Development, Intro to Psychology
  • Spring '24: US Humanities, Physics 3, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Computer Architecture and Organization (CS 4), Discrete Structures (CS 5), Honors Intro to Music

Awards: Dean’s list each semester, honors diploma

Extracurriculars: This is probably where I’m lacking – active in both computer science clubs at my school, volunteer work for my dad’s restaurant, honors program, active book review blog (was important to mention as part of a PIQ).

PIQs: I believe 2 of my PIQs are really strong while the other 2 I’d just call good. The first strong one is about how I use my book review blog as a way to express my creativity and how this creativity directly translates into my comp sci work (I made a small game that was inspired by fantasy books I read). The other is about how I strengthen my community with my dad through food; at his restaurant I connect with people, teach them about my culture, and reach out to even more ppl on the restaurant’s socials. I’ve even gotten to help children with immigrant parents strengthen their work in English courses at school. These are obviously extremely short summaries but that’s the gist of it.

Schools: I honestly don’t know which are targets vs reaches, so I’ll just list them!

  • CSU’s: Cal Poly Slo, SJSU, CSUN, CSUCI – I’ve already been accepted to CSUCI
  • UC’s: Berkeley, UCLA, Irvine, UCSC

Sorry if I put too much information down. I tried to look at other posts to follow the general format, I hope I did decent. I appreciate your guys’s time, even if it’s just quickly skimming

SJSU last year admission thresholds: Fall 2023 Transfer Impaction Results | Admissions

CSUN: not campus impacted, CS is not an impacted major: https://www.csun.edu/prospective-students/transfer-impaction

UCs: Transfers by major | University of California

Thank you for these! I had seen the UC link but didnt know about the CSUN and SJSU ones. I appreciate it!

Cal Poly SLO’s target projections for CS transfers shows 72 spots with 1096 projected applicants. The College of Engineering yield is around 47% based for 2023 so the admit rate for Transfers is estimated at 13%.

The Transfer GPA for CS not broken out but the 25th-75th percentile of the admitted Transfer GPA range was 3.46-3.90.

Good luck.

thank you for the info! I appreciate it!!
