I will tell you first and formemost that my preference is NYU or USC.
I from Los Angeles and I love visiting New York. I fit in well in both cities.
I am a community college transfer student who has been admitted to all of the above. I need advice.
Things that I’m looking for in a university:
- Great location
- Excellent alumni network
- School/Campus pride
- Approachable professors. Not TA’s
- Prestige for grad school
- Overall unforgettable experience.
I am a Sociology and Ethnic Studies major with a career in the music industry. I state this because it is important that I am able to maintain my network in the music industry as well as maintain as a student.
USC is awesome. I am a current student and I could not imagine my experience anywhere else. In terms of the things you mentioned above, it has all 6 of those points.
I don’t know much about NYU. I attend USC, I’ve taken classes at UCLA and live right by it. I have friends who go to Berkeley.
-
UCLA is located in the best location of all the universities you mentioned. It’s located near Bel Air in Westwood. Don’t think you can get much better than that for location…
-
USC easily wins in the alumni network. Simply because it’s all about the “Trojan” ideal. Trojans help Trojans. I’m not saying that because I go to USC. I’m saying that because I’ve seen it first hand over and over, and over again.
-
USC/Berkeley are close in school pride. Again, the whole Trojan ideal thing wins. But Berkeley is close too.
-
Approachable Professors - USC/NYU because they’re private universities. Berkeley is a close third. UCLA is light years away in that category. You’re basically doing your studying on your own for the most part. At least from my experience at UCLA.
-
What do you mean by prestige for grad school? Do you mean what looks better on an application? If that’s what you mean, then Berkeley wins. But honestly, they’re all very, very close.

Unforgettable experience… That’s tough. USC/Berkeley I would say are the choices. USC students seem to really love their time at USC, but I’ll say that’s mainly because of the insane rich-kid parties and the fraternities. Berkeley students seem to really like the school too but I do hear that Berkeley students study non-stop which doesn’t seem very fun to me, but I wouldn’t really know.
Ultimately I would say it’s up to your financial situation. Berkeley should be the top choice for you but it depends on your major. I am very pleased at USC and I think these are four top-notch universities to choose from. It’s a win/win/win/win situation. You can’t really go wrong. Just choose which campus you like best and what school supports your major the best. The rest, well, that’s up to your intuition.
Maybe this question is not the right one here but I’d like to know of international students can get scholarships while transferring to universities. You see I’m a north african student and I heard about the SAT two months ago I took it and got 1400 and my parents can only pay 10000$/year.
