<p>I’m a transfer student who is heading to Emory for Fall 2012. In my previous college, I took a civil war to present history class. Unfortunately Emory only counts it as an elective and not a GER requirement. However, Emory has a similar class (1877 America to Present) which will satisfy the GER requirements. I really enjoyed the class in my previous college and wouldn’t mind taking a similar class in order to satisfy my GERs.</p>
<p>Question: Will retaking a very similar class in order to satisfy a GER look bad when I will apply to medical schools? </p>

<p>I really don’t think they’ll care at all, as they’ll be much more concerned about your science and overall GPA and your MCAT score, not to mention your research, volunteering, and shadowing experiences. I’ve taken several different courses at my (one) college that ended up being very similar in content, despite being distinctly different courses, and were I to apply, I doubt adcoms would bat an eye. If you’re still concerned about it, take a different course to fulfill the requirement, and avoid the situation entirely.</p>

<p>It probably won’t matter for med school, but I would take another class. College is about exploring, finding different things that you like, and a whole lot of other cliches. I’m sure there are other classes in the history department that you will like.</p>
