Transfer To A Top Uni, And Double Major

I like to transfer from a community college as a Computer Science Major. My current GPA is a 3.72, but will will most likely increase to a 3.8 or higher. I, however, am more interested in philosophy, and would like to pursue a doctorate degree in it. However, to get accepted to a doctorate program your academic pedigree is important. So the main topic for me is where (in the top Universities) can I transfer? And I also must be able to do a double major in philosophy.

Could I transfer to a University that doesn’t have a highly ranked computer science program, but a highly (or extremely highly) ranked philosophy program, and would they allow me to double major in their philosophy program?

The Universities I am thinking of are

University of Notre Dame
University of Michigan
NYU
University of Texas (UT Austin)
University of California San Diego
University of Rutgers
University of North Carolina–chapel Hill
University of California
University of Wisconsin–Madison

I currently don’t have any community volunteer work, is this a big factor? what are big factors in admissions? My academic goal is to get a masters in computer science and a phd in philosophy

Do you actually have a plan to do something with this, or just think it sounds impressive?

Regardless transfering from CC to these schools is hard. How was your high school transcript? ACT/SAT? etc…

My high school grades weren’t good at all. I believe though that they don’t look at high school grades after you have completed a certain amount of classes.

Even with a 3.8 GPA, I wont be able to get into these Universities?

As for ChadVene, I don’t see how your question is pertinent to my question. I am well aware of the fact that philosophy isn’t exactly the most employable degree out there. However, I am also doing computer science. Both fields do have an affinity with each other, and so they are not two random majors. I want to pursue a doctorate in philosophy so as to become a professor. I am well aware however of the scarcity of professorships available.

I didn’t do the ACT or the SAT. My GPA in high school was 2.something, low something.

I don’t think what you are saying of transfering from a community college to one of these Universities is as what you are making it. University of Michigan has an acceptance rate for transfers as 40% and of those accepted 32% are from CC.

What are my chances to this University? I like this Uni a lot.

If you get an AA from a CC with 3.8, you might be accepted by one of those. But do not expect much FA. Don’t even think about doing it first year.

I think you need some community involvement. Some Uni’s do look at high school information, even if you are a transfer. Additionally, depending on where you live, OOS tuition is going to be a big factor if you’re looking at FA. As Artloverplus indicated, transfer students don’t get squat! UC’s are broke and are looking for OOS dollars. So cross off UC if you can’t afford $40K+ per year.

I think as along as you can keep a GPA of 3.7+ or even better 3.8+, you definitely have a good chance at the universities you listed at here~ Michigan/Notre Dame/NYU may be reaches but others are matches.

University of Rutgers is ranked about 32 in computer science. Surely I can get into it, no? Remember I am transferring as a computer science major, not a philosophy major. I like Rutgers as they have a really good philosophy program.

University of Notre Dame isn’t highly ranked in computer science. How is it a reach to get into to?

From what I hear after you have completed 60 credits Uni transferers (made that word up) don’t look at high school records.

As a back up plan, can i get accepted into University of Florida and Florida State University (I live in Florida). And what should I aim for to get accepted to Rutgers and the other Unis I have listed. And thanks for the current replies.

A few points:

Do you like Computer Science? If you don’t, you might want to think about it as a major.

You could take philosophy as a minor. Any good Computer Science departments would require you to do a lot, a lot of programming. You would not want to do a double.

Also, you might be require to take couple more programming clases in the summer; as programming classes at CC usually are not “strong enough” for you to transfer to 4-year schools.

Of course, it is up to you.

Keep up the great GPA. Get your an associate degree from the community college, then the 4-year schools will base your admission on your college GPA a lot more than the h.s. GPA & test scores.

I think 4-year schools still has to verify that you actually graduated from h.s., or obtained a GED.

Work with the Transfer Office at your community college. They would give you a detail plan for you to transfer to those schools.

So do I have a chance at Rutgers?

Of course you can get into RU Computer science program. I’m also a cs major from a cc. You should also attempt at more recognized schools.
