Transfer to BU, NYU, or UF

Hello everyone, I’m currently a Sophomore at Florida International University and am planning to transfer to either Boston University, New York University, or the University of Florida because I’m not a fan of the Miami atmosphere since I’ve lived here my whole life. I am more interested in going to NYU because I love the school and the opportunities they offer but I’m also worried about the cost of it since I’m a pre-med student and everyone warns me to save as much money as possible for medical school so I’m conflicted. However, if I were to go to UF, most of my expenses would be paid for because of Bright Futures.

Here are my stats:
Major: Biochemistry, B.S.
Standing: Sophomore
GPA: 3.6 (Will be going up after my spring semester)
HS GPA: 3.3 (unweighted) and 4.4 (weighted) —> Graduated top 9% of my class of ~900 students
EC’s: Site Leader for Alternative Breaks, Media Relations Intern for the Athletics Department of our school, Historian for a pre-med club (AMSA), and a tutor for Biology students

Please let me know about my chances for going out of state, especially for NYU since that’s my dream school. Thank you!

UF will require that you complete and transfer 60+ credits (junior status). They don’t normally accept Freshman/sophomore transfers.

If transferring into the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), which is typical for pre-med majors, see the following link for each major’s requirements and recommend competitive GPA. Some majors are much more competitive than others.

Here’s the breakdown of UF’s Cost of Attendance (COA):

Bright Futures will cover tuition, but the bunk of your expenses will be housing and foot. It’s possible to get by in Gainesville with spending less on housing/food than the cost stated in the COA, but those cost are a good rule of thumb to follow when planning your finances.

Good Luck!

I don’t know much about your chances but I do know that if accepted to NYU, you should take it. Everyone I’ve ever met whose gone to NYU has loved it. I’m from NY and I can confirm living in the city is great. I think NYU is a good investment because you can make quite a lot of connections.

Avoid NYU & BU if you intend to go to grad school & don’t come from a very wealthy & supportive family.

NYU will cost you over $70,000 per year, while BU will cost about $70,000 per year. Not worth it unless admitted to NYU-Stern for finance & set on a career as an investment banker.

@pickle123 You do not need “connections” at NYU or elsewhere if you are premed. Living in NYC is great if you can afford it. If not avoid it.
