I don’t usually consult college confidential, but I just wanted a second opinion on my motives for transferring.

I go to a school that is known for its undergraduate focus, and virtually no one ever transfers out. I’ve never even thought about and never will think about bringing the topic of transferring with my friends here, because people here are absolutely in love with the school. I’m a freshman, and I really liked my fall term here academically. I’ve also found my social life satisfying, as I have finally found my solid groups of friends. I’m just really grateful what I’ve been given thus far. But I feel I’m ready to move on.

What made me transfer was that I realized what I valued in my senior year in high school wasn’t important to me anymore. B/C i’m majoring in science/engineering, I realized I don’t need small classes (b/c science classes are lecture-based anyway), although small classes are nice. I do appreciate the overwhelming camaraderie here, but I’m just noticing that the “typical college experience” is not that important to me. I’m looking for a school where people are more driven about their life goals, instead of getting that college experience (50% of the student party goes greek, which is surprising, because its comparable to williams/amherst, and harvard in acaemics). There’s no reason for me to transfer academically, but I’m just looking for a student body that’s inspiring and much more diverse, and more in tune with my attitude (that college can be used to explore your passions, and test out dangerous/intimidating environments, instead of being trapped in a bubble and having that “time of your life”)

A transfer application means you enter into the class of 2015 next year, as a sophomore, and attend 3 years at Harvard? Or does it mean you enter as a freshman in class of 2016 for four years?

Frankly if your more into science/engineering and your already in a competitive school a place like MIT or caltech sounds like a better fit you you. Harvard just revised their engineering school though so that might be interesting as well. just my two cents.

on a related note is it easier to transfer to a place like Harvard if you already have a solid freshman GPA at another lesser Ivy league school like Penn or Dartmouth than from a place like Duke or Johns Hopkins? thanks for the info.
