My son is applying to michigan LSA for fall 2026. He’ll be a sophomore. He complete one semester with a 3.9 at a really good private school. We’re OOS. He has good extras and had a 34 ACT but I’m not sure if they really even look at that for transfers. Any insights on chances? When do people usually hear back for fall transfers? Thanks so much!
I think that more information would be helpful.
What was his high school GPA? Did he apply to Michigan out of high school and get turned down? Are you fine with the full cost out of state prices at Michigan?
Is 3.9 his unweighted university GPA? I am not clear on how this is possible if you have four or five classes with A=4 and B=3, so I am guessing this involves A- or B+ grades. Regardless it sounds like he is doing well where he is, but does not quite have all A’s (without a -). If this is just one A- with four A’s, then this is a pretty good start wherever he is.
Why does he want to transfer?
With only one semester of university grades, high school grades are going to matter. To me this suggests that we need more information before guessing his chances, although just waiting and seeing what happens is also of course an option.
Agree the HS record will be important. Is there a reason he wants to transfer?
Hi. 3.9 university because all As and one A-. Re: high school, he had a few B+s sophomore year and then all As and A-s junior and senior year in a lot of APs classes. He went to an extremely competitive private high school so a few Bs is sort of expected. He wants to transfer because he realized he wants a bigger school. He spent a summer at Michigan and loved it and we’re also alum, so it was always in his blood. He was deferred in high school and we didn’t want to chance it so went the ED route at a smaller school, which may have been a mistake.
Given the additional information to me it sounds like an application is definitely worth the effort.
I am not a big fan of ED.
Best wishes. I certainly hope that this comes through for you. I would expect it to take some time before you hear back, but you never know.
Having attended a Pac 8 university for my masters, back when it was the Pac 8, and at the time having a girlfriend who was a Michigan alumni, I am wondering whether or not to end with: “Go Blue!”.
Hope it works out.
ETA: if he 100% wants to transfer perhaps throw in a couple of other applications to slightly less competitive schools.
If Michigan, then you’d apply to Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan State, etc. too - right - to ensure a bigger school or the home state flagship?
What I don’t know is - is one semester enough? You’re asking for a different decision than less than a year ago. Of course, he was deferred and you withdrew so we don’t know what the decision would have been.
Has he spoken to a transfer advisor there? They might be able to guide him on whether it’s too early or not.
In 2023-24, we know 6113 applied and 2124 were accepted. What we don’t know is - how many of them are guaranteed or close to from other U of MI or affiliated JCs, etc.
It might behoove him to have two years experience - but I think if he wants a big school, he can have a big school - Michigan or otherwise.
If it’s Michigan or bust, he can apply and then re apply if it doesn’t work out.
Good luck.
