Transfer to Michigan (Low GPA)

Female, Previously applied (Deferred then rejected)

My high school academics is decent. I was furious back then when I didn’t get in because I saw that in-state kids with lower scores than mine were accepted. But I got over it and am attending another university with a top engineering program. The reason why I want to transfer is because my parents live in Michigan now (So I guess I’m in-state but I wasn’t when I was applying) and I would like to be closer to them.

My college GPA is honestly outrageously awful (Freshman GPA: ~2.9) but it was because I was a student athlete (Club sport but extremely competitive with ~15 hour weekly commitment) and I was awful at balancing academics with athletics. When I realized that I started placing my athletic life over academics, I forced myself to quit the team. Now I’m on my 1st semester of sophomore year and I am confident that I can get mostly A’s for this semester (Expect around 3.2 by the end of Fall and upward by the end of the year). It’s not that the classes are easier because they are definitely harder but I am able to focus solely on my classes.

I’ve heard that colleges like to see an upward trend on GPA’s so this has sort of made me hopeful. Please be honest me. Do I even have the slightest chance of being accepted as a transfer for U of Mich Engineering? Thank you!

Not likely. Being a student athlete is not an excuse for a low GPA, unless you can be recruited for the football team.

^ I think there is no girl in the football team. But I do agree that OP’s chance is not high for CoE transfer unless she got recruited as athlete.

UMich CoE is getting so competitive that even someone from in state with 3.8+ GPA and ACT 33 got rejected this year. Note that there is also a guaranteed transfer program with the engineering school at Flint Campus that will take a least some of the spots. Being an OOS applicant, you should expect a much lower chance than in state students with similar or even slightly lower stat when you applied as freshman.

Anyway, give it a try. You have nothing to lose.
