I have been accepted into both schools and I will transfer to one of them for my junior year. I am from the north and am majoring in social work. Alabama and its own school of social work but it is very expensive. Ole miss has it under a major of applied sciences but Ole Miss is a lot cheaper. Any thoughts on either of these schools with experience and academics?? Thanks!
I would be very wary about going into debt for a degree in social work. Can you afford Alabama? Can you afford ole Miss? Have you avoided debt thus far in your education?
Consider your future salary vs paying off loans. You may want to pursue an advanced degree. Your desire to help others is admirable and to do so you need to be careful with your finances.
I can’t speak to the relative strengths of the social work programs. UA is a better ranked university but plenty of people attend Ole Miss and do well.
Do you have a less expensive in- state option?
I can afford Ole Miss more than Alabama. I am not in any debt yet, I have about one year left until I will have to take out loans to pay for college.
I am currently at UW-Milwaukee for social work and have been wanting to transfer out somewhere with a new feel. I want a “culture shock” and figured college is a good time to do that since this is when you learn so many things about yourself by being on your own.
I looked and Alabama is ranked the same as UW-Milwaukee with their social work programs. Just the cost will ultimately be the decision making factor.

I am not sure what you are expecting to find. Have you been to visit UA and Ole Miss?
I just don’t think this is a good idea if it will cost a lot of money. Are you sure all of your credits will transfer? I think you should finish your degree where you are. You can always move to a new state once you have a job. You can always consider UA for graduate school.
Alabama will give you some financial aid if you do well. I’d say aim to make above a 3.5 or so and you might get some aid.
