Transfer to UMD business school - questions

Son is applying to transfer from another state university to UMD for spring 2027 entry. Would like to apply directly into the business school. Will have 45 credits completed at the end of the Fall 2026 semester at current school and a 3.8 GPA. By the end of this Fall semester, will have completed all Gateway requirements for admission to the UMD business school (accounting, calculus) but just realized that has NOT yet satisfied the Business Statistics gateway requirement. And may not be able to get into that course equivalent for the Fall at current university.

Without that Gateway requirement met or in process, our understanding is that he CANNOT apply for direct external transfer into the UMD business school for Spring 2027 entry. Is that right?

If so, the next option would be to get admitted to UMD under another major (say Econ) then apply for internal transfer to the UMD business school. But seems like could not apply for Spring 2027 entry to business school since deadline for internal transfers is Oct 1 and won’t even have been admitted to UMD yet at that point. Is that correct?

But would it be possible to instead apply to UMD for Spring 2027 entry as an Econ major, register for Business Statistics in the spring at UMD, and then once at UMD apply for an internal transfer to the UMD business school for Fall 2027 entry? Would this be feasible? Or will he have too many credits completed or in process at that point (around 60) to transfer to the business school? And is there a likelihood won’t be able to get into that business statistics class in Spring as a non-business major?

Appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thanks!

Have your S reach out to a pre-transfer advisor, these details are too important not to get info directly from admissions: https://pretransferadvising.umd.edu/

UMD also offers transfer advising info sessions and chat hours: Events | Pre-Transfer Advising

Lastly, he should make sure to make the EA transfer deadline, which is March 1.

Can he take a regular statistics class at his current college (many colleges have lots of sections of these- so many majors require statistics) and check with the UMD transfer advisor to make sure it qualifies? It should- the business stats sequence is typically the easiest-least rigorous of the various stats options, so taking the harder and more demanding version is likely to be fine.

This way he doesn’t have to “back door” his admissions- which is often fraught with unexpected issues!

OP’s S can check course mapping here, but definitely must verify with a transfer AO.

Is there Business Statistics at Montgomery College? Check equivalency. If there is online option take it on top of current load. He should have no problem get accepted to MC college.

If I am not mistaken Business had limited enrollment. If that the case, I would try to apply to Business directly.
