I dropped out of school in ninth grade and then earned a G.E.D. I have been working full time for the last several years have begun taking college classes part time at a local community college. I have completed 18 credit hours and earned all As. I will be attending college full time next semester (while working full time). After next semester I plan on quitting my job and transferring to a local four year college (the community college I’m attending is VERY small and doesn’t offer the classes I want or any extra-curricular) . I plan to work very hard for the next 3 semesters and have hopes of transferring to Vanderbilt to study economics after completing my sophomore year.

If I take tough classes, make As and take tons of Extra-Circulars my Sophomore year do I stand a chance? Has anyone else transferred to a top 25 college after dropping out of high school?

I would say that you certainly have a shot, although i have heard of few people who dropped out of college and pursued the path that you have…

certainly put in those two years however, youre going to have to reassure them that you can handle the work and a couple of semesters at a cc probably wont cut it

I considered transferring to Vanderbilt a little while ago and talked with one of their admissions representatives about what they emphasize in a potential transfer. He said that the #1 factor is college record, so you’ll stand a chance with a good college body of work. I don’t know how they view CC transfers, though.

In these types of threads, every story is different. But your story is a good one. To go from dropping out, to GED, to all A’s in a cc, to full-time college alongside full-time work… this is the portrait of someone who has the will to succeed and the ability.
