Hey all,

I have gotten a few letters from Wilkes University (school right outside Scranton, PA) encouraging me to transfer. I have never heard of them before these letters, but they offer a specific scholarship to transfer students that awards $10,000/year for a student with at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and $7,000/year for a student with a 3.0-3.49.

Tuition and fees per year are $42,000, though. While the scholarship seems lovely and all, it does not seem very appealing for a low income student such as myself. After this Fall semester, I will most likely hit a 3.5 GPA (minimum). The college looks nice, sounds nice, yadda yadda, but sounds like another one of those “We’ll give you this AMAZING scholarship!” even though they are a wallet-killer regardless.

I am searching to transfer to a university that offers large scholarships/grants (need and/or merit-based). My top choices are Columbia and Cornell universities, but I need some backups; Wilkes could possibly work if they offer some need-based grants on top of the merit transfer scholarship. While I also currently receive Pell and NY TAP grants, they would not cover the remaining cost at Wilkes.

Has anyone heard from this university? Attended there? I’d like to hear someone’s experience - maybe they are as good as they make themselves sounds.
