After an abysmal freshman year and terrific rebound sophomore year (OK, HOPING! and also very confident - for reasons I’d rather not disclose) what are my chances of being accepted as a transfer student at a school with a top-30 philosophy program (NYU-UC Riverside: http://www.philosophicalgourmet.com/overall.asp)? I’m unsure about the entire and how much weight is placed on high school numbers. If it helps, my SAT score was right around 1200/1600 with a GPA of, again, slightly over 3.0.

Is there anything I can do to upgrade my college prestige (and be happier)?

if you show significant improvement (like you had a 1.5 and now you’re getting 4.0s), then schools will take that into consideration. you should explain what changed in your essays and show how you’ve grown

I was the mid-2s, took summer courses and aced those, now enrolled in courses I’m confident I will enjoy this fall and exceed in. To be honest, I don’t think I’ve grown that much…unless part of growing is changing your mind and deciding what you want to do in life. Anyway, even with four As (and a 4.0) this fall I’m still going to fall on the wrong side of 3.1 :(

I assume Spring semester coursework for the application year makes little-no difference.

well i mean you had to have grown to see that you need good grades to make your educational dreams come true and in order to realize that you need to concentrate (and then actually concentrate), so explain what made you see that. spring work will make a difference because you need to show consistency and often they will make a final decision based on spring grades or will reserve the right to rescind your acceptance if your final grades aren’t up to par
