I am currently interested in transfering to University of Maryland for the spring 2017 semester.
I had spent 1 year at Xavier U and failed all of my classes there.
I was kicked out and moved to Maryland where I went on to fail one semester of 4 classes at a community college. It is 1 year later and I am on track to graduate next semester with a 4.0. How much of a problem will this be when applying to 4 year institutions such as UMD and UVA with 3 failled semesters but a 4.0 gpa?
Yes, they will consider your ability to turn things around. Many students have a rough start. However, I certainly can’t tell you it won’t matter at all and that Maryland will definitely accept you. You will have to apply and wait and see. But this is a situation they have seen before. They are always looking for students on an upward trend.
In August 2014 I went to a state college for engineering and completely bombed my first year. I was still stuck with the mindset of a high school student and it showed in my overall GPA for my freshman year, accumulating to 1.98. However my 2nd year I realized the mistakes I made and fixed them. My major switch from computer engineering to a double in Comp Sci and Accounting, and my fall 2015 semester accumulated to a 4.0 GPA making my overall a 2.62 and my second semester is also leading towards a 4.0 at this moment in time.
Taking into consideration of what I said above I knew that I had to transfer so I applied to NYU and CUNY Baruch with everything but the kitchen sink in my application ( personal letter, letters of recommendations, SAT score, HS GPA, Resume). Surprisingly I got accepted to NYU but rejected from Baruch, which was also funny since I did it as a joke since I obviously didn’t expect anything but they actually accepted me. I was so honored and pleased but tuition/post-grad salary just isn’t worth going to the school at all so I looked back at Baruch. Being accepted into NYU but rejected into Baruch I started my letter of appeal the same hour I received that rejection letter and about 2 weeks ago I got my acceptance notice.
What I’m saying is focus less on what you did and more on what you want to do, the past is the past and once you can believe that for yourself pick up a pen and write yourself on a paper. Individuality is key for many Colleges and Universities, even if you don’t have a solid resume or relevant experience, a simple piece of paper where your voice can be distinguished from many is sometimes the biggest key to get where you want to go in life.
