I am currently a student and University of Phoenix, a sophomore, almost a Junior now, and I am not happy with my experience with UOP. I go to school 1 day a week and I do not learn anything, I am currently a 3.8 GPA student and I want to transfer over to preferably UCR or UCI. I meet the class requirements such as 2 English classes, 1 math class, etc… but I’m afraid that my credits will not get transferred because Ive been paying a lot of money for these classes. I need advice,
Ive heard people will transfer to a California Community College such as Chaffey and then transfer from Chaffey to UCR or UCI. Do you think I should do this because Ive heard they do not like students who are transferring from 4 year private University?
What should i do?
any advice will be helpful, Thank You!
Howdy,
The UCs do not have any policy I’m aware of which specifically ‘looks down on’ transfers from private colleges. That said, it is true that some courses will not necessarily get credit at a UC. General transfer applicant info is here:
http://admissions.ucr.edu/Home/transfer
And
https://www.admissions.uci.edu/apply/transfer/index.php
You can see which courses articulate with UC classes here:

It seems you should contact UCR and UCI and ask directly.
University of Phoenix, as I understand it, is a for-profit university. It will take a long time and a lot of money to get further for transfer to a UC.
You should probably check with a community college counselor because you can only transfer as an incoming junior to the UC’s. It doesn’t sound like you have enough classes yet to transfer to a UC.
I called UCR and UCI already, they told me to talk to my University of Phoenix councilor and tell them if I should apply or not. so i called my counselor and she said to talk to the counselor at UCR and UCI. Then I called the Counselor at UCR and she said we cannot do anything till we know you meet the requirements
Its a weird mix up with nobody helping.
University of Phoenix is not a legit university. Complete all paperwork to withdraw, make sure they haven’t been getting our federal loans - including when you weren’t enrolled.
Attend a community college. It’ll be much cheaper, better quality, and will help you get into a UC if you can get high enough grades.
Do this today and make sure you do it absolutely perfect because otherwise they’ll scam you more.
If i transfer to our local Community College (Chaffey) how long would I have to attend the community college till I can transfer to a UC? This October I will be starting my Junior year, and I know UC’s only take Juniors. The Community Colleges in my area (Southern California) are very packed and classes are hard to get, so is it possible for me to get admission to a Community college and change to the UC right away? or do I have to attend the Community College for a certain amount of time?
You really need to see a CC counselor.
The UC’s have a set of requirements for transfer students. If you look on any UC website, you will see their list of course requirements before transfer. https://admissions.ucsd.edu/transfers/prep-programs/
It’s usually takes two years of coursework.
The time required at the CCC will depend upon which of your courses are UC transferable and do they fulfill the transfer requirements. You can use assist.org to see which courses are needed to transfer. The UC’s do not just take Junior level transfers, but you need a minimum of 60 semester/90 quarters transferable units to apply which does include HS AP courses if applicable.
With assist.org, you select your current CCC (Chaffey) then your destination UC (UCR/UCI) along with your major and you will be given a list of required and recommended courses for transfer.
I suggest you meet a UC transfer advisor at Chaffey and go over the requirements and the courses you have taken.
@ProfessorD gave you link assist.org link along with other links to help with your transfer questions.
Here is a link for the maximum transfer units for the UC’s:
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/uc-transfer-maximum-limitation-policy-chart.pdf
Use http://www.assist.org to figure out what course work at a community college you need to complete the requirements to transfer to a UC with your intended major.
Due to the poor reputation of University of Phoenix, there is a greater than typical risk that courses taken there may not transfer for subject credit (although it is regionally accredited (North Central), so course work is potentially transferable if approved by the receiving school).
In terms of junior standing, UC caps lower division transfer credit at 70 semester units (105 quarter units). If all of your previous course work has been lower division, you will not be in danger of being ineligible to transfer due to too many units (all community college units are lower division). See http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/uc-transfer-maximum-limitation-policy-chart.pdf .
Thank you guys, I really appreciate i!! I will call a cc counselor and go from their. You guys are the best!!!
You’ve mentioned that the community college near you is impacted and classes are hard to get.
You can enroll in more than one community college at a time. I definitely recommend using assist and looking at the class schedule of nearby California community colleges for more options and flexibility in class times.
Thanks ahuynh ill look into more then 1 school
