Transfering

What is the success rate of a transfer student getting into another college? I ask because i worry that i won’t get into the school that i want. so lets say i don’t and i get into another school thats just as great. In that one year of me being in that school, i pull off phenomenol grades would i be able to transfer into a different school? Another thing do you have to take the SAT again to transfer?

it depends on the no. of slots that normally open up. Places like HYP have insanely small transfer admit rates due to the exhorbitant no. of transfer applicants. Supply and demand

You would not take the SAT again to transfer, they would want your original scores from high school. Sometimes they don’t ask for them if you’ve already had a certain number of college courses. I actually never took the SATs at all - I went to community college first for 2.5 years, and then transferred to a 4-year, hated it, and then transferred to another more selective 4-year and loved it.

You can certainly transfer to a better school than you are at now, but in order to do so you want to keep your grades up, be involved in some extracurriculars, and have good letters of recommendation. You also want to start writing your personal statement/essay early so you have plenty of time to devote to making it sound really good.

And yes, more selective schools tend to admit fewer transfer students than less selective schools, but if your application is strong you shouldn’t have to worry too much.

I don’t think this kind of generalization can be made, particularly for a soph transfer. When you apply for as a soph transfer, you will be submitting your transfer application after having completed 1 sem of college, so you will still be evaluated heavily on your HS record and test scores. And depending on the selectivity of the school and what your SAT score was in HS, it may help to take it again.

I transferred as a freshman going into sophomore year, and as a sophomore going into junior year (I transferred twice).

It really does depend on the school. I was not referring to HYP status schools because the OP did not state that’s what they were shooting for, but from the large assortment that I had applied to, my general experience was this: they considered college transcripts, personal statement, and LORs first, and then would glance at my HS ones, but they didn’t seem to care all that much as long as I did reasonably well. During interviews very few counselors even brought up anything to do with my HS transcripts. No school that I applied to questioned why I never took my SATs (again, I did not apply to any top tier schools, but I was accepted to some excellent schools with low acceptance rates).

And yes, if you did poorly on your SATs and they want the scores, you may want to take them again. But I was stating that it isn’t /required/ to take them again to transfer, because that’s what the OP was asking.
