<p>Based on what I’ve been able to find, it seems as if most schools do not allow architecture courses to transfer from one school to another. This basically leads me to believe that once you’ve selected a school you basically need to finish there and cannot transfer into an arch program at a different school. </p>
<p>For example, for financial reasons my son may need to go to Bufallo which is only a 4 year program. Lets assume finances change and he wants to try to transfer to Cornell’s 5 year program (I’m only using this as an example, I’m not even sure if cornell allows arch credits to transfer) after the first year. If his studio classes aren’t accepted, how does he fill the extra two semesters of studio. Would he have to complete 5 years at that point?? Are studios offered in the summer?</p>
<p>Has anyone transfered from one arch program to another?? What schools and how did they treat transfer of studio credits??</p>
<p>I think you’re son should talk directly to the arch dept at the BArch schools he is considering trying to transfer into to see what other schools they have taken transfers from. For example, Cal Poly takes kids from a CC called (I think) Cuesta, they have some sort of agreement that accepts all the credits. One prof at CP told me the kids that come into CP arch from Cuesta are all up to speed and ready to go first day.</p>
<p>cornell does accept some credit. i think it largely depends on where your son is coming from. the transfer that i know who is in my year now had his studio credits from syracuse transferred over. if studio credits aren’t transferred, there are summer studio courses for your son to take either on campus or abroad. </p>
<p>i would also be careful of transferring to a 4 year program for financial reasons. a 4 year program means that your son would need to go to grad school, which can be more costly than finishing the degree in 5 years.</p>
<p>My son had applied to and was accepted to several 5 year Barch schools, but when we sat down and crunched numbers after we got the financial aid package we found that going to a Barch program was going to cost $45,000 extra over the course of the program and it was cheaper to go to buffalo with a 4 plus two program. (With financial aid Buffalo is $10K year for 4 years plus $20k a year for 2 years versus a private with financial aid that would be $25k for 5 years - awesome aid, but still beyond our reach) </p>
<p>Of course, we are now weighing if the extra $45K is worth going to a “better ranked” school and finishing a year earlier. So, basically the transfer of credits question was posed in the event that he/we feel he should go somewhere else after the first year or if he will lose all his studio credits.</p>
<p>Some courses transfer into the architecture program, the ones that I am strongly sure that will transfer is history of architecture and materials and methods of construction courses, but anything else, I am not sure about. </p>
<p>Financially wise, if your son goes to a 5 year program, he will not need his masters unless he really wants it (for teaching). If he goes to a 4 year program, and still want to be an architect, he would need his masters (2 year program), because he needs to graduate from a professional program to be eligible to take the licensure exam. This is where the financial issue takes place. Like any other masters applicant, you want to go the best or well known, these well known schools can really make your pockets empty. </p>
<p>I am also a transfer applicant, and I will most likely graduate a year late (IF I DO NOT TAKE any summer courses). what I am going to do, to help my both financially and career wise, is intern at an arch firm in the summers and breaks , to save up any kind of money, and gain the experience.</p>
