Transferred from UCSC to UCD...

I transferred this year from ucsc to ucd, but not on my own will. My parents wanted me to go to UCD solely because of its ranking compared to UCD. But I am really not happy here. My grades are also dwindling because of my unhappiness and now I’m on academic probation for the first time. I had great grades at UCSC and I loved the environment. I want to transfer back, but I’m not sure how that would look on a resume. Do you think it’s worth it for me to go back or should I just continue with the two years at UCD?

stay there, you’d look really “indecisive”, flaky on resumes, if you transferred again, at least in my opinion

Can’t you just drop out of UCD and ask to be readmitted as a UCSC student (without actually doing the UC application again)? I think at UCI they have this sort of policy where if you drop out for more then a quarter you just ask to be reinstated.

Yeah, I can. I can just apply for readmission. Ugh, but I’m really unhappy here. Is low gpa + better school better than great gpa + decent school?

Go back, assuming they’ll let you (they being both your parents and UCSC). You’re not happy at Davis so obviously it isn’t the right place for you. You only go to college once, do you want to spend the next 2 years at a place where you are so unhappy your grades have plummeted?

As far as your resume, there is virtually no impact. Your resume will say “UCSC class of 2015” and thats it. If some employer on an application asks to to list every school attended then do so, but I can’t imagine anyone looking down on you for having xfered twice. And if asked simply say your parents thought Davis was better, you tried it for a year, and then went back. Employers aren’t heartless robots that expect perfection, they’re people that understand that when you are 18 or 19 you don’t know what the future hold and don’t make perfect choices. The typical college student changes majors 2 or 3 times, for example, and yet nobody holds that against them. And lastly you are going to be 10x more marketable as a student with good grades who transferred twice than one with poor grades who “stuck it out”.

edit: saw you posted as I was writing. We aren’t talking Harvard and UCSC here. Davis is in the broad band of decent large publics, and so is UCSC. Davis is slightly higher ranked, but like I wrote before that is swamped 10x by the lower grades. A fair number of employers have a GPA cutoff, either stated or implicit, where they won’t even consider you. If you are on probation at Davis it is safe to say you are well below that line…

Make sure that UCSC will reinstate you even though you are on academic probation at UCD. Normally colleges and universities will not admit transfers who are not in good academic standing at their current school.

@OP I tagged to ucsc and I also applied to davis. I was planning on choosing Davis over sc if I got accepted to both. but I’ve fallen in love with sc and it’s all I’ve been thinking about. can you tell me what you didn’t like about Davis and your experiences and such? Im worried I’m going to regret my decision on where to attend…

also, do whatever your heart tells to to do. you only go to college once so make the best of it an do whatever makes you happy :)

It is really too bad when students let their parents rule their lives to this extent. I am a parent of 2 daughters. We live in the Bay Area. One daughter went to her choice of college in Oregon and my younger daughter is a senior at uCLA. These were their college choices, not mine or their father’s. I feel for you. Not sure the best thing for you to do. But please, in the future tell your parents “thanks you” for the advice, but do what you know is right for you.

uchappytrain - At Davis, I felt like it was more difficult to socialize as I am not in a typical dorm this year. I live in Cuarto where we are put in apartments and everyone sticks to their own group here. The campus of Santa Cruz is also beautiful. There’s wonderful views and you can take a hike in the forest anytime you want, even just going to class.

Davis is very spread out and there’s nothing really interesting to look at. Have you visited Davis as well? The campus is pretty nice, but a bit overwhelming. But I guess I came with a closed mind to the campus in general, since I was bitter about leaving Santa Cruz.

inquiring- Yeah, trust me, I fought to stay. But I have a really strict mother that threatened to stop paying for my tuition entirely if I didn’t transfer.

I haven’t visited either campus, but I was lucky enough to have a cc counselor who attended sc and she showed me amazing pictures and told me all about her experience. I also read reviews from people that didn;t like the sc campus though. They said a lot of things were dirty since the campus is located in a forest. They also said the campus is very big and spread out.

is it really that beautiful ? would there be a chance that I would regret going to sc…?

You really should visit both campuses before you make your choice. You can’t make choices based off pictures! And yes, there are beautiful views in Santa Cruz. If you visit Cowell college you will know what I’m talking about when you look over the soccer field :)

@ uchappy there is just something magical and awe inspiring when one is in the forest and close to nature. Santa Cruz’s campus is one of a kind. You MUST visit it but know that once you do that you will make up your mind in picking it to attend.

that sounds amazing I have to visit the campus now (:

what the? how do you think it is fair to just transfer between campuses?

It’s already hard for many to transfer once. This has to be a joke. It is not up to you, it is up to admissions. I advise you go speak to the Dean of Admissions or Vice President of Student Services and ask them.

This is ridiculous. You are an adult, you should make your own decisions. I am assuming they are paying for your education is your excuse for why you HAD TO transfer. I HIGHLY doubt this is going to happen. What you are going to end up doing is screwing up your chance at a UC altogether and find yourself at a CSU or CC.

Where is lemaitre1 when you need her?

^^ thats a little harsh. you shouldn’t judge anyone’s decisions until you’ve been in their shoes. You have no idea what their life is like, what they’re been through, or how they feel. Try to be a little more kind and stop acting like you own college confidential.

uckittychen- Haha, why are you being so bitter? It’s really not that hard to transfer between the UC’s… many of the people I knew this year transferred between campuses. And you’re right, it wasn’t up to me. UC Davis accepted me. So obviously they thought it was fair for me to transfer between the campuses, now didn’t they?

Lulz, how am I screwing up my chance at UC altogether when I am at UC? Nice logic…

report back when your second inter-transfer occurs.

ill be more than happy to surely apologize when it happens.

Actually, I did apply again for UCSC for Winter Quarter and they accepted me. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend for that quarter, but I asked the admissions counselor if I could apply for Spring as well and she said that was no problem.

Still mad? :)

blatant lie. you mentioned nothing of that up until now. I am disregarding this thread all together.

HAHAHAHAHA. Want me to show you the e-mail? Damn, you’re bitter. Yeah, you’re disregarding this thread because you know you have made yourself look like an idiot.
