Transferring 2nd Semester Freshman Year

Hi Everyone!

I am currently a student at GW, and although I came in thinking it would be a great fit, I find myself absolutely miserable. My grades are lower than they have ever been and I feel as though it is a horrible fit. I know the deadlines have passed to transfer mid-year to any noteworthy schools, but after talking to my parents, they agreed to let me spend the rest of the year (starting next semester) at state school in my hometown while applying to other schools. Would transferring twice hurt my chances of admission? Also, here are my high school credentials:

4.0 GPA
National Honor Society
Cum Laude Society (top 10% of my class)
9 AP classes (max at my school); AP Scholar with Distinction
Yearbook editor/captain of two sports teams
Worked the entirety of my senior year
Was in 4 other active clubs
SAT Subject Tests: US History - 750 World History - 700
SAT: 1790 (I know its horrible)

As it stands, my college grades are 1 A, 2 Bs and 1 C, but I am busting a gut trying to get them up; I am on GW’s D1 crew team, and I also tutor at a local high school.

With this in mind, do you think it would be possible to gain admissions to a reputable school come fall of my sophomore year? I know my SAT score is quite low, but are there any schools you could recommend? I am looking to study political science if that helps.

Thank you!!

American is like GW Jr. so it might be easier

I’m not looking for easier…just a better fit. I’m honestly just really unhappy.

You may want to consider dropping the volunteer work for the time being to free up that time to study.
Do you still want to row if you transfer?

Yes I definitely do!

Have you reached out to the crew coach at any other colleges you are considering?

In terms of fit, what you looking for in your next college?

I think the city environment is too overwhelming for me, I’d like a more campus-y feel at my next school. But my grades are a mess at the moment and I am not sure where I could be admitted even if I were to do well at my state school.

Why don’t you consider taking the spring semester off entirely? That will solve the whole transferring more than once thing.

Is the tutoring a requirement for a scholarship that you hold? If not, ditch it until you have your academics under control.

What will it take for you to pull that C up to at least a B? Are you far enough behind in that class that you could consider taking an Incomplete in that class and then finishing the work in the spring?

curious as to what you’ve decided on doing??
i’m going through a similar experience - except didn’t move fast enough to transfer next semester
