Transferring after one semester?

I’m not sure if this is in the right area, but I’m new and not quite sure how to navigate around the site well yet. I just really need help.

For a while I’ve been wanting to transfer, or just pretty much get out of the school I’m in now. I go to Medaille College in Buffalo, NY and I’m majoring in Veterinary Technology and going for a Bachelor’s. The program is okay so far, but it is too expensive and too far from home, not to mention FREEZING and their public transportation is horrible!

I live in NYC, and I’ve been searching the web a lot for other schools that have a Veterinary Technology program. There is only ONE in the entire NYC, and it’s LaGuardia Community College. I want to go there and it’s so much cheaper. The question is, is it a good idea to transfer to a community college? Does it matter? Will I have to start completely over?

I’ve also been having issues waking up for class. I had an 8am class this morning and I woke up too late. The class had already finished and I find myself feeling like crap, not to mention ashamed of this. It happens a lot and it’s because I can’t get to sleep at night. I feel lonely and depressed here and I also feel bad because my boyfriend (we’ve been together almost 5 years now & we live together) is back home taking care of the house, paying the bills, and taking care of my pets. I want to be home helping him, but I also want to go to school.

Obviously I can’t get a refund for any aid/loans or any money I’ve been paying to the school. However, I don’t want to continue being charged to attend this school or get aid to attend this school, etc. What do I do?

Thank you so much for reading this!

If I only do one semester here and then go to LaGuardia in the Fall, does that work? Please help!

See your counselor at school. Talk to a professor or your dean. College is NOT a prison. But its for adult learning and they expect you to make decisions like adults do. After careful consideration and planning. CC is not the place to do that, though some may offer helpful commentary.

Most community colleges have open admissions and so long as you are registered for classes next semester at least half time, then your student loans won’t kick in and collection agencies start hounding you…but they will continue to accrue interest.

Get professional counseling at school, particularly if you are depressed. See a prof or the Dean and get the best advice on your academic dilemma. Good luck…

I think if you were my child I would encourage you to finish this semester, then come home. Buffalo is a huge change from NYC, and it is only going to get colder after Christmas.

Contact LaGuardia and ask them about credit acceptance. You probably just took basic courses this semester, so probably you will do ok.
