Transferring and UCR Questions

Pertaining to UCR:

What math am I placed in if I do not take/need to take the MAE? I got over 600 on my SAT in Math.

For the AWPE… I got over 680 on my SAT in Writing. I am definitely exempt from taking the exam and will be placed in English 001A right?

In terms of classes… say I get wait listed to a course and I get in later (but after I have registered for an alternative course)… When I drop my alternative class will the drop be considered a W?

Pertaining to Transferring:

Do transfers take only upper division courses? (As students who aspire to transfer must complete breadth courses prior to transfer)

Thank you for your time :]

Hoping someone will know ~

As for the Math, I am wondering because I would like to enroll in Statistics.

You should contact UCR and schedule an appointment with a counselor to answer your questions since they mostly pertain to your particular situation. You only receive Ws if you drop a class after a certain deadline that is a few weeks into the beginning of the semester. Transfers can take whatever classes they need/want to in general. Not everyone who transfers completes all their lower level requirements before transferring and some people choose to take additional electives later on as well. So no, not all transfers complete ALL their lower division coursework though most complete IGETC and their major pre-requisities prior to transfer.

This is the UC transfer forum, the students here (the UC Transfers forum) are individuals who are currently trying to transfer into a UC as 3rd year students so most of us will not be able to answer your question.

As for your questions…

“What math am I placed in if I do not take/need to take the MAE? I got over 600 on my SAT in Math.”

All students take the MAE. The test is determined based on the last math class you’ve taken in high school and passing it means that you can advance onto the next level. If the last high school class was pre-calc, passing the test will mean that you enter calc 1.

“- For the AWPE… I got over 680 on my SAT in Writing. I am definitely exempt from taking the exam and will be placed in English 001A right?”

Yes, the score satisfies UCR’s ELWR requirement.

“In terms of classes… say I get wait listed to a course and I get in later (but after I have registered for an alternative course)… When I drop my alternative class will the drop be considered a W?”

Going off my experiences with CCC here: The last date to register for a class is usually in the first 2 weeks, if you can’t get in by now, you’re not going to unless you talk to the instructor beforehand about sitting in and waiting for others to drop… sometimes they permit it if facilities, labs and lecture seats, are available, but you will know it when this happens so you’d be able to drop your other class in plenty of time before the W deadline a month into the term.

“- Do transfers take only upper division courses? (As students who aspire to transfer must complete breadth courses prior to transfer)”

Transfer between UC’s is extremely difficult will likely only become more so, do not hedge your bets that you will get in anywhere since the success rate is rather low. If you already know that you do not want to complete your degree at UCR, NOW is the time to leave it and register for your classes at a local CCC.

As for CC to UC transfers, we spend 2 years taking only lower division classes relating to the UC GE requirements and our major requirements. After we transfer, our courses consist nearly exclusively of upper division classes with the exception being any work that can not be transfered over.

Thank you for your help! :]

@feedayeen: Actually, I’m not sure about the MAE because it says for my major I don’t have to take it. Thank you though! :]
