I’m looking for some advice here. Daughter is a freshman at Smith College & she is considering transferring for next year based on the social aspect. Smith is a great school and she loves the academics so it has nothing at all to do with that. How do you go about writing a transfer essay when the reason you are transferring is 100% social?
Typically the transfer essays (at the schools that have them) do not ask why a student is leaving their current school. They tend to be typical essay questions in a similar vein to the common app personal statement questions, and/or a typical Why Us? Essay. Generally, no reason to spend time on why one’s current school isn’t a good fit.

Be honest in the transfer application essay as to why you want to transfer to that school. In your daughter’s situation, it will be understood that a single sex environment did not work as expected so no need to express this concern beyond a single sentence in the transfer essay. Rest of essay should focus on reasons that applicant wants to attend the transfer school.
