Transferring college after freshmen year?

I am currently a second-semester freshman and I am very unhappy at my current university. After much reflection, I have decided not to return to my University next year. However, this leaves the problem of where to go. It seems like I must transfer my credits to the local community college and do my sophomore year there before transferring to another four years. I’ve done extensive research and I can’t seem to find any universities that take people there a sophomore year. Is this possible? And what universities take sophomores specifically in California.

The reason why I am not returning to the college I am currently in next year is because I am having a difficult time switching my major. I went in as an animal science major and would like to switch to biology, but I am finding it difficult to switch. My college is very impacted and they close to the biology major. I am also terribly homesick and would like to transfer to a college closer to home, specifically in Califonia.

The public schools in California won’t take you as a sophomore.
The private schools may take you-depends on GPA and available space.

Your issue would be if your major is again impacted.

Another issue is financial-can you afford full fees at the privates? Many schools don’t give very good aid for transfers.

Most CA publics make changing your major pretty simple process - take these classes - get above a threshold GPA and your done. Which school do you currently attend?

As noted by @“aunt bea”, CA pubilcs only take Freshmen and Jrs. It depends a bit on your GPA and how many units you’ve got to date but, a CC near near your family home or near your target school will probably be your best bet.

It won’t address your homesickness but, perhaps take a look at some of the WUE schools like NAU, UNR and OR Inst of Tech - none of which are too far across the CA state line. Not sure when their application deadline is.
