Hi! I’m currently a cc student figuring what school I want to transfer to. I had intended a CAL state as I have a handful near me but, they don’t have a grad program in psych. UC does but I only live near one and the other 2 are a bit of a drive (id be driving daily since I can’t move). Should I transfer to a UC and then after my Bachelors apply to the grad program or transfer to a Cal state then apply with a bachelors? Does it affect my chances if I transfer with a bachelors? Thanks!
You don’t need to attend a UC for undergrad in order to apply to UC grad programs. There’s no reason to consider schools that aren’t within a practical commuting distance. Apply as a transfer to the schools that are close by. Have you met with a transfer advisor at your CC? They can help you assess which guaranteed transfer pathways you qualify for, and where else you may want to apply. Consider relative costs as well; not all grad programs are funded, so you may need to conserve your resources, depending on your goals.
Go someplace and complete your bachelors degree.
For grad school, you will not be transferring. You will be applying newly for grad school programs.
You can apply to any grad school you choose. Your undergrad doesn’t matter in terms of choosing grad school…two separate things.
Terminology:
Transfer between programs before completing a degree.
To get into a high degree program, you need to finish current degree and apply.
From CC to any undergrad program is a transfer.
If you want to do a Grad program: Masters of PhD, you will apply and start after getting your Bachelors Degree.
Any grad school will take applicants from any school. I had many grad student TA at an UC campus who came from CSUs.
You don’t transfer with a BA. You apply to grad schools.
Go to the school that you can afford, which is likely to be the one where you can live at home. Get perfect grades and great recs, and apply to grad schools.
There are two types of doctorates in psychology. A Ph.D. in psychology focuses more on research and a Psy.D. focuses on practical application. The UCs aim at producing academics although they may also meet state licensing requirements to practice. Depending on your interests a UC may or may not be the best fit. But as others have said, grad school is a decision down the line and you can apply to both types of programs with a BA/BS from any 4-year college.
