Transferring from a Private College

Hey everyone, I’m an incoming sophomore at the University of San Diego looking to transfer to a UC or Cal Poly SLO. I absolutely love attending USD, but am finding that it is no longer affordable. The current tuition that I pay is $25,000 a semester, including food and board. My scholarship covers the rest of the cost. A little more background; I will be attending law school after my undergrad, currently hold a 3.85 cumulative GPA , and my extracurriculars include me being a Zumba instructor at my campus gym and also teaching a Zumba credit class as a faculty.

Major: Business Economics

What advise would you give me? Is cost alone reason to go through the hassle of transferring colleges? Is there a chance many of my credits won’t apply at the new university, which would push me back a year? As someone who’s first transfer preference is UCLA, what are my chances? As someone looking to pursue law school, what UC or even state school would be the right choice? I read somewhere that UC’s require you have 60 units before transferring, so does that mean I can only transfer into one for my Junior year? If so, do I stay at my current college and throw away more money?

Thanks for your help in advance. I would appreciate any advice.

UC’s and CSU’s accept Junior level transfers with a minimum 60 semester/90 quarter units. Transfer preference is given to CC transfers, followed by UC/CSU transfers, Private 4 year CA transfers then OOS transfers.

Affordability is important especially with Law school as your goal so transferring makes sense but are doing well at USD which would make sense to continue there.

The affordable and easier transfer option would to attend your local community college to complete the 60 semester/90 unit minimums required starting this Fall.

There is always a chance that some of your USD credits may not transfer and you would have to spend extra time completing your transfer requirements.

Below is a link for UCLA’s Business Econ Transfer requirements along with needing to complete the UC or CSU GE requirements. You can try to cross reference the USD classes with the assist.org classes listed for each campus. You might also want to contact your local CC transfer advisor and ask for more information.
