Transferring from an engineering school to a music school

When in high school I was a pretty well accomplished vocalist having gone to all of the available levels of NAfME competitions from the district, regional, state, all-east and national conferences I am a NATS semifinalist and finalist and have completed many music theater shows. When it came to college though, I decided to attend a strong engineering school in the mid-west to study mechanical engineering. While here, despite having a good GPA, I have found that the drive that many of the students here have to code, design or other professional hobbies do not appeal to me and I find myself spending more and more time contemplating if I have made the right decision to go to engineering school. I just feel like I don’t really belong and that my mind wonders to performing and composing music. I am considering transferring to a music school but there are lots of things that I don’t know about in regarding transferring into a music school. I did apply to some programs when I was looking for colleges but what happens when I am going from a non-music major to a music major? Will I have to start over? Is this a poor decision?

Unless you are going to a cheap, good music school and you are really truly passionate about music, I think it is a poor decision based on what you said.

Can you join some music groups at your current campus?

Is there another major there that will help you get a job so you can pursue music part-time?

If you want conservatory-level training, you will need to start over completely. If you just want to add a music minor to your engineering degree, you probably can squeeze it in where you are now.
