transferring from drama to dance

ok, so I’m a freshman at nyu studying drama, which I’m enjoying. I’ve done theatre since I was a little kid, so it’s always been something I just assumed I would do. however, a few years ago I started dancing and fell in love. to put it in perspective, I started ballet for the first time at the age of fifteen, took class twice a week and by my sixteenth birthday I was doing pointe. I think I’m a quick learner, I love it, and whenever I listen to music (which is most of the time) ideas for movement are constantly running through my head.

at this point, I have no doubt that this is the one thing I really love to do, even more than acting. the thing is, I’ve only danced intensively for a few weeks out of 2 summers, and during the school years I’ve always been too busy (and too poor, haha) to be able to take more than 2 or 3 classes a week. and even with that, oftentimes I was in shows or overloaded with schoolwork so I had to put off classes for months at a time. realistically, I would probably estimate my technique level to be above-intermediate (not advanced). I have taken classes in ballet, jazz, modern, horton, african, hip hop, pilates, and a little tap. also, since I haven’t gotten to take dance class here in new york, I’ve been taking yoga a couple times a week to keep in shape.

so my question is, without having to throw loads of money that I don’t have towards classes to try to magically build my way up to the level of girls who have been dancing intensively since they could walk, what can I do to get into nyu’s dance program? I know I may not up be to par technique-wise, but I truly feel this is something I’ve wanted to do ever since I started at the age of fifteen and have been too intimidated by the competition to admit to myself. if anyone could help me, or at least give me names of people I should talk to within the department or tisch, it would be greatly appreciated.
