Transferring from NYU to elites (Stanford, Duke, Harvard, Yale, Columbia)

Hey guys, unfortunately I will be ending my high school yrs with a 90 overall average. My senior yr grades were bad (3 A’s 1 B, 3 C’s in a full ap courseload) due to extenuating circumstances (parental illness, 2 jobs, etc, eviction, etc). As a result, I will be going to NYU through the HEOP program.

If I am able to get a 4.0 for the next yr or 2 yrs, and raise my SAT’s to the mid 1500’s old, do you think I can get into these schools, despite a lackluster senior yr?

yes don’t worry just be true to your word and hold a 4.0 with high SATs but you may like NYU more than you think

your highschool stats matter more if you plan on matriculating into your sophomore year at these schools. If you want to transfer as a junior however, your college grades will be more regarded(although your SATS will still count). I really dont think you need a 1500 in order to be competitive.Bottom line- your high school stats dont matter nearly as much once you enroll in college.A 1350 should suffice-along with an amazing essay, a cute photograph of yourself, stellar recs, a very good college g.p.a, advanced courses taken at the college level, a very good reason why you want to transfer to the institution(i guess that’s included in the essay).

should you really send pics of yourself?

I don’t think SAT’s will matter much, if at all, when applying to transfer.

I transferred from NYU to Harvard - also accepted to Columbia and Penn, so it’s certainly possible.

I’d recommend taking a Freshman Honors Seminar that interests you, and getting a strong recommendation from the professor. The professors who teach the seminars are almost always excellent and well-respected, and the class sizes are small (most are under 15).

Good grades, of course, and strong/compelling reasons to why to transfer (i.e. not just “prestige”).

Most importantly, go to NYU with an open mind, and only then think about transfering. Not only will you have a better time, but it’ll give you deeper perspective.

esperame- why not? an ‘alligator grin’ photo can really help. While everyone else just sends in their grades,essays,etc.- you send all that sh it PLUS a photograph of yourself. They’ll actually know what you look like as opposed to just reading about you.they’ll definitely remember you when they’re making the decisions. It has to be a good photo though.

Augie- im curious-what were your SAT scores?

wait, what about cornell?

u have the gt like me, are you just not going to use it?

iwannatopcollege is just a prestige whore who cares more about the name than the education

lol …

im actually most definitely going to use it. However, I would just like to keep my options open for the future. IMO, Cornell is better or just as presitigious as all these schools, most especially in the sciences.

iwannatopcollege-- make sure you are involved on campus with activities that interest you and become friendly with at least one or two professors. while your gpa will play an important role in your application, it is not the only factor taken into consideration. good luck!

what is a gt?

guaranteed transfer. Theoretically, a gt can transfer into the school given some requirements.

oh wow. thats nice.

I didn’t use the GT either…

haha don’t underestimate nyu either…
getting 4.0 in nyu might be harder than you thought.
speaking as a freshman in nyu…

You should be happy attending NYU. You are given an opportunity to attend a school top-ranked through HEOP that you would not be able to otherwise.

Its also going to be hard to maintain a 4.0 at NYU.

I agree with those who say getting a 4.0 in NYU is easier said than done. I’m currently a freshman at NYU, and all those humanities based- MAP courses are out to lower your GPA. like, seriously. At least the professors I have had, they have all been very tough graders. So beware, it’s going to take a lot of work to keep a 4.0 at NYU. just like it is a lot of work to keep a 4.0 at any university.

and also, you haven’t even gotten to NYU yet. you should really try to go in with an open mind, and who knows? NYU may be the best place for you, and you won’t want to transfer out. NYU is still a very prestigious school, even though it doesnt have the names “Harvard”, “Yale”, or whatever else.
