I was accepted in the Temple architecture program and the Northeastern program and I am having trouble figuring out what to do. I would really love to go to Northeastern but it would put a large financial burden on me and my family. Northeastern’s main plus is the co-op where I could walk away with a job already lined up. Temple would be easier on me financially but I would not have the same co-op experience. Would it make sense to transfer from Temple and then continue at Northeastern? Or would the programs differ too much and I would just be wasting my time. I know each school is unique in the way they teach so I’m not sure if this is a viable option.

For the financial part I suggest you call Northeastern to see if they take arch transfers from other arch programs what that would involve in repeated or extra coursework and add that expense into your equation. If you are just worried about the co-op then call Temple and see how they handle internships and post grad job placements.

Ummm the co op thing is a total joke. We have a great arch program here at Temple and believe me, if you do well, you’ll have no problem getting a job/work experience…

I’ve been thinking about the same thing, except with IIT and USC…USC would be a pretty big financial burden but I get the feeling that it would set me up for a ton of employment opportunities not only in the US but around the world.

About the co-op, because the program is different wouldn’t it be harder to transfer in? Because the structure is different so the pace of teaching and courses could be different…that’s just something I noticed.

What I meant was regarding any internships or emplyment opportunities, Temple did not have any Architecture-specific program for finding jobs. All they told me was professors knew local architects and they would recommend you. Thus, it seems Temple’s abilities to help you with internships or jobs didn’t seem as strong as a co-op.

sisu, is it your intention to become a licensed architect? If so, then you need to understand that in order to do that, you would have to go to Northeastern for 6 years vs. 5 years at Temple.

The B.Ss in architecture offered by NEU is not accredited by the NAAB (National Architectural Accrediting Board) and therefore would not make you eligible to sit for the architectural licensing exam. After earning your BS degree at NEU, you would have to continue on to get a M.Arch. degree (which is usually a 2-year program) in order to take the exam. You could continue on at NEU – its M.Arch. program is accredited – or you could get your masters at another accredited school.

On the other hand, Temple’s 5-year B.Arch program is NAAB-accredited, so you would not need another degree to take the licensing exam. (Temple also offers a 4-year B.S. degree in architecture that – like NEU’s – is not accredited by the NAAB.)

If you don’t plan on being a practicing architect and only want a B.S. degree in architecture, then the Temple and NEU programs are comparable. But if you do want to get your license, then you need to think about that extra year of school.
