Transferring Out As A Freshman Without Completing Any Courses??

Hi!

I’m a freshman starting at UMiami who wants to transfer to American University or GWU for the next (spring) semester, however, since I’m applying as a transfer without any completed classes, I won’t be able to have anything on my college transcript or won’t have enough of a relationship with my professors to ask for recommendations.

Basically…

  1. Can I use high school teachers as recommenders for transferring?
  2. Will it be okay if I have nothing on my transcript?

Also
3. Can I use activities from high school on the activities list?

Dear “UofMorMSU” or “UofMiamiorAmericanUorGWU” – there is no perfect university out there. You are enrolled in a fantastic university. Stay put for a year and give it your best effort. You must have been interested in this university at one point, or you wouldn’t have applied there and enrolled. After a year of seriously trying your best academically and socially, if you still want to transfer, then you have credits to transfer and a college history to write about in the application.

Look on the websites of the schools you want to transfer to and you should be able to find information regarding the process and requirements for transfer admissions.

@mommyrocks I went to Miami because it had the highest ranking meaning the easiest time transferring out…

Why would you start at a university only with the intention of immediately transferring out?

If you don’t take any classes at all in the university, why would its reputation or ranking matter?

What happens if you don’t get accepted to American University or GWU or if you can’t afford them?

The relative ranking of Miami is not going to help you one bit if you attempt to transfer for the second semester of freshman year. That is only usful if you have a year or more of grades and are competing againststudents from other places as a transfer applicant.

As things stand, it probably makes more sense for you to not enroll at all, and just take a gap year while you apply to the places you would want to attend

@happymomof1 I’m already enrolled and will complete 5 classes by the end of the semester… but my grades won’t be finalized then.

You’d have to ask those schools, but since all you’d have is your high school transcripts and scores, I think they’d consider you as a freshman, except that you will no longer be eligible for the financial aid that a freshman gets. They may have rules about not admitting freshmen transfers and then you aren’t eligible at all.

You can unenroll. I think you’d be better off applying as a true freshman. If they do accept you, it will be conditional based on your current semester’s grades.

I’m going to go as far as to say that there is literally no point in attending UM. On top of the fact that you’ll be pretty much be looked at as a freshman applicant, UM is notorious for bad financial aid across the board. That means that you’re most likely paying to attend UM.

I can sort of understand the logic behind going to a certain 4-year institution with the intent of transferring. But UM is not affordable, nor will it help in any way if you’re transferring for spring semester.

UM is such a great school! And while I don’t really understand why you’re looking at GWU / American over UM, I will say that when doing the math, attending UM will only hurt you.

Unenroll from UM, use your newfound time to think about what direction you want to take, and apply for spring semester as a freshman applicant.
