Transferring to an American uni from UK.

I’m going to be an exchange student starting in August for 10 months at Valdosta state. Im from England so could anyone give me any tips on what to expect? I have the usual American stereotype in my head but I kinda wanna know more before I fly out.

Thanks

Valdosta State is an interesting choice for an exchange program.

@Jamie1197 , use the websites college niche and Uni go. They have lots of student reviews and ratings, whihc will give you a lot of good student info. I have never heard of Valdosta. Where is it?

^ It is in southern Georgia.

How did you choose it ? What course are you reading in the UK ? Are you planning rondo research while there ?

From the UK to southern Georgia. Yikes. Culture shock!!

@Jamie1197 , what is the usual American stereotype? Not sure what you are expecting, but I think you should bring along lots of Jammie Dodgers and Monster Munch as peace offerings:-)

@MYOS1634 I chose it through my uni, I had a few options like Maine, North Texas, Appalachian State but Valdosta campus looked the nicest and was the best for my course which is dance. And no I’m not planning that.

@katliamom what is that supposed to mean? what is it like there?

@Lindagaf Just like everyone seems very friendly all the time and apparently American people love the Brits. And I’ve got this image in my head of it being very like American high school TV programmes where you have different groups of people like cheerleaders, footballers etc. Haha yeah I sure will. Cant believe you don’t have those!

@Jamie1197 , they will all think you are related to,the Queen:-). Joking about Monster Munch. No one needs to be subjected to pickled onions! Though Jammie Dodgers are delish. You will have a great time, don’t worry.

Valdosta State is in the rural South and its students aren’t the best, that’s why we’re surprised. Think kids who in the UK do 5 GCSE’s and get B-C grade, then BTech or other non A Level qualifications. The campus is great and the town too. Lots of choices for majors. Many of the students will be, by UK standard, hardcore conservative Christian. You’re less than 2 hours away from the beach, where you can go and swim until November, and starting in April (especially if you’re used to British water temperatures, you’ll be in heaven.)
