Hi guys I have a question. I am leaving my school because I was a witness in a pretty traumatic event. I was in no way involved in what happened I just witnessed it and can not focus at my school anymore. I am going to go to community college in New York for a year and am paying for my own housing, phone bill, food and education. I am filing independent and am living in the Bronx as a black girl alone (a pretty bad area). I am planning on getting straight A’s while working 30 hours a week to supply for myself. I am a published writer that has provided commentary on hardships minorities have faced. I have experience working in the juvenile justice system and first hand experience of what it can do to a person. I plan on writing my college essay not on the hardships I have been faced with but on how those hardships have made me a better more resilient person capable of succeeding. Because I live in NYC I want to transfer to Columbia, what do you think my chances are.
Very few transfers are accepted to Ivies.
This firm does pro bono admissions counseling, and you might be a perfect candidate for it: https://www.■■■■■■■■■■■/about-ivywise/ivywise-gives-back/
Consider looking into the Brown Resumed Undergraduate Education program or RUE. They target highly talented students from community colleges all the time.
While it is very difficult to transfer into an Ivy, you have a unique set of circumstances- IMO you can use those to your advantage, as you clearly have a unique perspective. What MAandMEmom said might be great for you- Brown loves social justice-y stuff and I can see you fitting there.
