Transferring to UGA...what does that mean for my GPA?

So I’m a rising sophomore at Emory with a 3.6 GPA (3.3 1st semester, 3.9 2nd semester). I’m very seriously considering transferring to UGA if financial aid doesn’t meet my expectations.

I know I can’t get into the Honors program anymore (I should have just accepted the UGA honors invitation as a HS senior… bummer), but how does my GPA transfer?

I know UGA picks which courses transfer, but if I got a B+ in a course that transfers does UGA count that as a 3.0 rather than a 3.3 because UGA doesn’t use the +/- system?

Not really sure how your GPA will transfer, but UGA does use the +/- system.

Firstly before you worry about your current GPA do you know how many of your credits will transfer? That would affect your GPA tremendously and possibly put you back a year. (but you probably factored that in already :D) As for your question, maybe this site will help. [Plus Minus Grading Q & A](http://bulletin.uga.edu/spring2006/PlusMinusGradingFAQ.html)

Well when I originally planned to go to UGA I checked how my AP scores correlated and found out I could graduate in 2 1/2 years if I wanted, so I’m not too worried about credit transfers. I’m sure at least half of the courses I will take at Emory will have some sort of equivalent course, since I’ve taken general classes (intro to psych, abnormal psych, english poetry, intro to film, etc.)

Thanks for the head up about the plus/minus grading system though…can’t believe I missed that!

Here’s the site were you can verify the equivalency. I’m transfering alot of credits as well and this site has been my best friend. Dude it would suck to be messed up… [University of Georgia :: Undergraduate Admissions :: Transfer Equivalency](http://www.admissions.uga.edu/apps/transferequiv/#) Check it out

Thanks, appreciate it

I’m thinking about transferring out to UGA too. Does anyone know if UGA uses the A-plus scale because the school that I’m planning to transfer from (Georgia State) just implemented the A-plus (4.1 I believe) last semester.

nope, no a+

uhh…when you transfer your GPA resets…only thing that is coming with you are credits…

Are you serious!!! :D:D

False. Your grades will come with you. I came in with joint enrollment credits and my grades came with it.

^ You are clueless.

I repeat, your GPA will NOT come with you as a transfer student. You will have a running transcript which shows your GPA from schools attended but your UGA gpa will start once you start taking UGA classes. This makes quite a bit of sense. Trust me, i was a transfer student.

You made it sound like your GPA from your last school will be completely erased from record, which isn’t true. Of course your UGA GPA will only start once you’re at UGA, but you should have an overall GPA that includes transferred grades, do you not?

Oh…see jenmarie I’m in your situation and the reason I was so happy before was because that meant all of my JE grades are forgotten and I have a chance to start over. But since grades do transfer and overall gpa does not change, then I have nothing to be joyful about :frowning: . So really im not clueless i m in a different situation then you were

No I didn’t. You didn’t know the difference between transferring and joint enrollment.
You will never see a GPA that includes everything to date. Just several from each school from the respective schools transcripts. For each school that you transfer, that schools transcripts will only show credits accepted from previous schools.

I know the difference between transferring and joint enrollment, thank you.

Fine, you may be right, but for those coming with joint enrollment grades, they WILL be in your overall GPA.

obviously, that’s how joint enrollment works.

vblick: Actually, UGA treats both joint enrollment and transfer work as the same (except for the payment by HOPE, but that is a different area). There are a number of GPA’s at UGA, from your UGA GPA, overall GPA, transfer GPA, HOPE GPA and major GPA. All work, regardless if it is JE, transfer or UGA, will go onto your overall GPA (thus the word overall). UGA requires transcripts from every college attended, and then posts what transfers and calculates a GPA on all work that would be transferable (even F grades that do not then transfer). While your UGA GPA starts when you attend, your overall GPA is based on all work. Get a copy of your transcript to see the variety of GPA’s on it (at least overall and UGA will be on it, and maybe transfer GPA).

Are you talking about credits? If so I’m confused as to how many people you think have been debating this because the correct answer is zero.

I’ve seen my official transcript and it doesn’t have any transfer related info other than my transfer credits. The only GPA recorded is my overall GPA and semester GPAs. I’m a Georgia Tech Alumni, not UGA, so maybe they do it differently. I’m not sure why they would though since they both fall under the state of Georgia school system.

Wait, you don’t go to UGA or haven’t gone to UGA? Yet you’re answering questions for UGA students? Not to mention being rude at the same time. Well that’s interesting.

So I’ve thought about this, and I think I’m right actually. If you access Oasis and go to Student Records then to “View Courses Previously Taken,” you’ll pull up a page with all your courses and grades and number of credits that you’ve taken so far. This list will include your transfer credit and grades. The same screen will show you your UGA GPA and overall GPA. Your UGA GPA is all the grades from courses taken at UGA. Your overall includes UGA and transfer/JE credits.

Also, I’ve just remembered that one of the classes that I came in with wasn’t joint enrollment. I took it the summer after I graduated. This grade is factored into my GPA, so I’m guessing that if using me as the example, any grades that you’ve accumulated before you got to UGA, no matter how you got them, as long as the credits transfer, the grade transfers as well, and it will be calculated into your overall GPA.
