Transferring to UMD

I was admitted to UMDCP Fall 2010, but chose to go to St. Mary’s College of MD instead. While I like the college I’m at a lot, and know that its only been 2 weeks into the semester, I’m seriously considering transferring to UMD for Spring 2010. The only problem is that I’m not guaranteed housing. Is it still worth it to transfer if I dont have housing? Not too mention that I wont find out if I’m in until winterbreak.

If you could wait until fall 11, housing will improve with the opening of a new high-rise. Are you concerned about the shock of moving from a tiny LAC to a MEGA school? You won’t get the personal attention here that a small school provides. I’ve heard many nice things about St. Mary’s, but I assume you have have a good reason to make such a dramatic change. Good luck …

ironically, I almost went to UMD. The thing that I dont like about st marys is that I realized that I want that big school experience such as going to football games and having loads of school spirit.

Fear the turtle! :)

Well, there’s usually more housing in the Spring than in the Fall (Spring is when many students study abroad, opening space in dorms/etc.). Also, just like you are transferring to UMCP, students also transfer out…

Why not apply and see what happens? You can ask about your prospects for housing in the winter, too, when they have all the applications in and a better idea of how much space they have.

Transferring is tough whether you get housing or not…it is sometimes hard for people to fit in after missing out on all the freshman floor bonding and all that. But even if you don’t get on-campus housing, there are ways to be closer to “the action”…securing close-to-campus “off” campus housing (i.e. a room in a group house or apartment complex walking distance to campus), joining and really getting involved with clubs (that’s NOT just showing to one or two meetings and giving up), etc.

Ultimately I don’t know that housing versus not having housing should be the deciding factor, since it’s possible you won’t get put in a freshman dorm anyway, and the effect of not having that bonding experience is similar even if you are…(since you missed out on first semester). And anyway, kids who stick with the friends they met freshman yr in the dorm are lame…there are many ways to make friends here but keep in mind that as a large school and then doubly as a transfer at a large school, it will not necessarily be easy, you wil have to have dedication…

thanks umcp! yeah 2 of my best friends already go to UMD, so it may be a bit easier for me.

I am in the same boat. I want to transfer out of the school I am in to umaryland as a spring semester freshmen. Will it be that difficult? I am also worried about the no housing guarantee. Should I send in my application asap? I am looking to go to a huge school with tons of school spirit, I wish I had known that 2 months ago though. They have a transfer orientation so that should help, I HOPE. Help!
