How does college life differ if you go in as a freshman vs transferring in as a sophomore?
This is going to depend a lot on the college itself. At some colleges, transferring in is more uncommon and almost everybody begins at their freshman year, so you have to be more proactive about meeting people and breaking into social groups and activities - as well as about transferring your credits over. At others (especially larger public universities), transferring is pretty common and there are lots of other new folks in their sophomore and junior years, plus tons of resources for transfers.
Also, at some colleges there are some traditions or something that may be based on things that happened freshman year. For example, at my college the freshman dorms are like a mini-house system, with Greek letters and chants and calls and songs and steps and competition between them. Although people don’t hold onto them as strongly after freshman year, it is a bonding experience that does last into alumnae years - alumnae will come back and represent their freshman dorms and such.
But there are lots of other activities and traditions you can still enjoy in your last three years, too.
- Usually freshmen get better financial aid.
- You won’t have things like freshman orientation to help you make friends…you will have to be more active in doing that.
