Transferring with a W on transcript

I am currently a freshman engineering student, but I am changing my major next quarter to political science (my school has us declare a major right away) and I am considering withrawing from my engineering class.

There is still a chance I could make a B, but I’m scared that I’ll end up with a C or D. I want to transfer next year (with Stanford at the top of my list of schools). Will a W in a class that is no longer relevant to my major negatively affect my application?

One W probably isn’t going to kill you. You seem to be on the right train of thought. If you can pull a B, go ahead and keep it. If you feel as though you are in danger of worse, then go ahead and take the W
You can explain why on the app versus the GPA eye test which hurts a bit more I would think
