Transfers to Rice?

Who here is transferring to Rice and what are your stats?

Mine are as follows:
GPA: 3.78+
SAT: M690 V590

 • Applying from local Houston university
 • Attended half of High School in Oman (Middle East)
 • Recs are from two professors who are Rice alumnists
 • I have been awarded an endowement scholarship for half tuition from my school
 • I am on the Dean’s List (Of course)
 • Member of Pre-Law Honors Society
 • Member of English Honors Society
 • I speak fluent French and I was employed for a year in Belgium
 • I am also in the process of publishing an article for a reputable journal in philosophy
 • Running my own web design business where I have made thousands of dollars in revenue.
 • Highly Competitive HS debater. I won several awards from the National Forensics League for Lincoln Douglas Debate and I have also competed in regional tournaments for the NFL, Texas Forensics Association. I am also a competitive extemporanious speaker where I have competed in Regional tournaments for the University Interscholastic League and the NFL.
 • Member of HS Band - I was first chair for the alto saxophone in my Oman school and I was one of the 8 individuals selected to play for a visit from Former President George Bush Sr.
 • I am also learning to fly with an expected pilot’s license in 2005.
 • Student Council Class Rep. in the 10th Grade
 • Dramatic Speaking Finalist (5 out of around 250 students)(Oman)

I have a laundry list of other ECs including:

 • Soccer Team (1 year)
 • Volleyball Team (2.5 years)
 • Softball Team
 • Basketball Team

I am constructing an appendix to explain why I am not a “serial joiner” in my ECs; since I moved, there was a significant barrier to my advancement in these activities.

I have also participated in Community Service where I was a member of a relief team that helped alleviate problems after am earthquake struck Turkey in 1999.

I have “alumni” status as my first cousin just graduated from the university. I also have evidence of extensive research at the school as I have visited the head of philosophy and several other professors in that department.

Finally, I have a really good essay!

Any help?

Thanks!

You have like… guaranteed admission there…

Really!?! All this time I have been contemplating a retake of the SAT!

off the subject but
don’t people from belgium speak dutch?
ik ben gek op nederlandse jongins.

(the only thing i learned how to say while in holland)

and on to the subject: you seem like you’re pretty much in at rice.

There’s no such thing as guaranteed admission to Rice. Anyone who says that knows nothing about it. The admission rate hovers around 20% each year, and these are generally high-quality applicants.

However, I’d say you have as good a shot as anyone. As a freshman I was waitlisted, but last year I was accepted for transfer to Rice. Though I chose to go to Penn instead, I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have about the transfer process. (Yay for Houston!)

fingercuffs2006,
I actually have a lot of questions, do you think I could send you a msg on AIM or MSN?

fromdistantstar,

Most Belgian residents are bilingual and some are even trilingual or “quadlingual”. The main two languages are French and Flemmish with some knowing English, some knowing German, others knowing Spanish and a few knowing Italian. There are a lot of arabs/North Africans as well. Europe is such a wonderful place, is it not?

By the way, I would sell my soul for Rice…

Wait, should I save my soul for law school?
