From the article in the Chronicle of Higher Education

A committee comprising students and members of the faculty and staff issued last July a 178-page plan for the restructuring in which the university’s four separate undergraduate liberal-arts colleges, including Douglass, would have been eliminated. However, in what was seen as a compromise, Mr. McCormick proposed to create a residential college for women, with specialized classes, on the former Douglass campus.

Last year Mr. McCormick told The Chronicle that the undergraduate experience at Rutgers, New Jersey’s largest public university, was hampered by an “arcane system” in which students enrolled in one of four liberal-arts colleges, all of which have different admission and graduation standards but share the same faculty members. Mr. McCormick, a former president of the University of Washington, has called that structure “the weirdest academic setup in America.”

i have to admit having RU basically 5 minutes away from me and princeton 20 minutes away, seeing the different ways they were setup princeton did follow the more common system of college of arts and sciences school of engineering all comprised on one campus verses RU which had the 4 individual colleges with mixed things on each of them
