I was astounded at the NEC feedback of students… only two of them went into a music related career! You would think, at such a conservatory, they would become some of the best musicians… and then they go into culinary?

The dedication I have put into my music and my attempts to get into a music school would feel feeble if I didn’t go into some music-related career. It doesn’t have to be performing, it could be teaching, or technology, or a lot of things… but no music at all? Wow.

Carol McKeen aid it best:
“My path has taught me that the music is in me, and I will always find a way to express and enjoy that as long as I live because I am a musician. The extent to which I perform, and for pay or not pay, is not who I am, but rather, the choices I make.”

College is a time of discovery. Some discover that there is more in their life and go in other directions leaving music behind. Friend of DD’s discover that singing (well ) and studying music were 2 different things. He did not like to study music, he liked to sing. Singing is a hobby now while he pursues another major. . Some discover that their passion will not be enough to sustain them and music becomes an avocation.

I think they have to be open to all the possibilities and we as parents have to stand behind their choice.
