The Board of Regents approved the Central Campus Transit Center on Thursday. Work on the roadway between the C.C. Little Building and the Alexander G. Ruthven Museums Building near the School of Dentistry is expected to start in mid-May and be completed by fall.

The $4.5 million project will reduce traffic from two lanes to one in both directions of North University and add larger bus loading areas on both sides of the street. Other work in the project includes:

Adding larger shelters to accommodate more bus riders.

Adding bicycle lanes and bicycle racks to meet demand.

Replacing the water main under the street to improve fire protection in the area.

Repaving the street.

Improving the pedestrian walkway across North University.

Creating an accessible entrance for the west entrance to the Ruthven Building.

Two words: about time!!! This is great news because I will have to use this area more often next fall.

No doubt this place needed some work.

Now all they need to do is get some reasonable transportation between north and central campus. Aside from driving, the alternative is jam packed M-buses that never seem to come as often as you need them on weekdays and never seem to come on weekends.

I find this unnecessary at this point in time. The bus stop there is fine. There are better places to spend 4.5mil on.

It says repaving the streets which I’d say is important.

the street is fine. There are many worse roads out there.

Overall, I think the North University corridor needs a makeover.

In construction, $4.5 million is not costly. The Thompson Street Parking Garage Renovation costs $15.7 million (est). Bridge and highway work is even more expensive.
